Germans embrace fresh air to ward off coronavirus - The Guardian

fresh.indah.link

Ventilating rooms has been added to the German government’s formula for tackling coronavirus, in refreshing news for the country’s air hygiene experts who have been calling for it to become official for months.

The custom is something of a national obsession, with many Germans habitually opening windows twice a day, even in winter. Often the requirement is included as a legally binding clause in rental agreements, mainly to protect against mould and bad smells.

But while some people may dismiss the method as primitive, “it may be one of the cheapest and most effective ways” of containing the spread of the virus, Angela Merkel insisted on Tuesday.

The German chancellor explained that the government’s guidelines to tackle the virus, encapsulated in the acronym AHA, which stands for distancing, hygiene and face coverings, will be extended to become AHACL. The “C” stands for the government’s coronavirus warning app, and “L” for Lüften or airing a room.

“Regular impact ventilation in all private and public rooms can considerably reduce the danger of infection,” the government’s recommendation explains.

Germany coronavirus cases

Impact ventilation, or Stosslüften, which needs explanation for most people unfamiliar with Germany except for experts in air hygiene, involves widely opening a window in the morning and evening for at least five minutes to allow the air to circulate. Even more efficient is Querlüften, or cross ventilation, whereby all the windows in a house or apartment are opened letting stale air flow out and fresh air come in.

In Germany, windows are designed with sophisticated hinge technology that allows them to be opened in various directions to enable varying degrees of Lüften.

Since it has become known that 90% of Covid-19 patients pick up the virus indoors, the practice has come into its own. With winter on the doorstep, it will become even more important, experts insist.

The country’s leading coronavirus expert, Christian Drosten, who is head virologist at the Charité hospital in Berlin, has already dedicated an edition of his hit pandemic podcast to the importance of Luftverdünnung and Luftbewegung – air rarefaction and movement – in which he extols the praises for frequent airing, while the weekly Die Zeit has published a 10-page feature on ventilation, including the science behind it and, especially how to do it in winter.

Even without coronavirus, Martin Kriegel, an engineer and air current analyst at the Technical University in Berlin, told Die Zeit, “there is clear evidence that air quality in offices correlates with the number of days workers are off sick”.

Schools, which have increasingly been viewed as a testing ground for how society can learn to live with the disease, have long since adopted the practice. A recent gathering of the ministers of education for Germany’s 16 states was dedicated to how to air a classroom. Five experts, from fluid mechanics to indoor air hygienists and aerodynamicists, reinforced the importance of airing a room every 15 to 20 minutes, for five minutes in spring and autumn, and three minutes in winter.

But although the custom is well-established in Germany, it is also a frequent cause of tension, which some fear is only likely to increase this winter the more people practise it.

The typical grumpy German response of someone objecting to an open window, is erfroren sind schon viele, erstunken ist noch keiner – many people have frozen to death, but no one has ever died from a bad smell.

Helen, a 34-year-old primary school teacher from Cologne, who did not want to give her full name, said: “A typical scenario in Germany is someone opening the window in an office or on a train, say, then the next person comes in and complains it’s draughty – that’s another German obsession – and insists on closing it. That’s also why Germans often wear scarves.”

She has been following the recommendations and airing her classroom every 20 minutes, she said. “I do enjoy regularly airing, whether in the classroom or at home, and now because of the coronavirus it seems more important than ever. Though I am concerned how I will manage with the kids in winter when it’s really cold.”

Tesla’s third-quarter deliveries will likely mark a fresh sales record - MarketWatch

fresh.indah.link

Tesla Inc. is slated to report third-quarter deliveries, its proxy for sales, this week, and Wall Street appears to be optimistic the numbers will back the Silicon Valley car maker’s ambitions for 2020 and mark another quarterly sales record.

Analysts on average expect Tesla TSLA, +2.37%  to report the delivery of 140,000 vehicles, according to FactSet on Wednesday. Of those, 107,500 would be Model 3 units, and 8,000 and 7,300 would be Model S and Model X vehicles.

Joseph Spak at RBC Capital said he expects sales of around 144,600 vehicles for the quarter, which would be new quarterly record for the company.

Tesla has not reported sales by region, and in the past has combined the trickle of Model Y sales with Model 3 sales.

Related:Tesla stock soars more than 5% after company reports surprise Q2 profit

Model 3 sales numbers likely will get a boost from the made-in-China Model 3s, Spak said.

“This is not to take away from the growth story, but we point out that we estimate Model 3 sales ex-China (i.e., in TSLA’s more mature markets)” would be down 8% year-on-year, Spak said in a note late Tuesday.

The delivery consensus expectations are “very achievable/likely beatable,” and Tesla would need to sell about 176,000 vehicles in the fourth quarter to hit its goal of half a million vehicles delivered in 2020, he said.

Tesla in July reported second-quarter sales of nearly 91,000 vehicles, crushing Wall Street expectations, even as its sole U.S. car-making factory in California was shuttered for most of the quarter under local shelter-in-place orders aiming to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

Emmanuel Rosner at Deutsche Bank tweaked lower his expectations on Tesla deliveries to 130,000 units, from 140,000, pinning it on “slightly softer U.S. Model 3 and global Model S+X volumes ... but still representing a quarterly record for Tesla.”

U.S. sales of the Model 3 could be weaker due to competition with the Model Y compact SUV, he said. Rosner said he expects 2020 deliveries around 480,000, the low end of Tesla’s recently reiterated outlook of 30% to 40% growth year-on-year.

Deutsche Bank upgraded its rating on Tesla stock to buy last week after the company’s “Battery Day.” Rosner on the Wednesday note reiterated that rating and said he’d “use any deliveries-related stock weakness to accumulate shares of what we view as the best way to invest in EVs.”

Tesla shares have quintupled this year, which compares with an advance of around 5% for the S&P 500 index. SPX, +0.82%

Dollar General adds fresh produce to 6 stores in Cleveland, answering city planners' concern - cleveland.com

fresh.indah.link

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Dollar General has added fresh produce to six of its Cleveland stores, checking off one of the reasons why Cleveland City Council approved a moratorium on building more dollar stores in the city late this spring.

While remodeling the stores, Dollar General added fruits and vegetables and “refreshed” the layout of the stores to make shopping easier, the Goodlettsville, Tennessee-based company said in a written statement.

“With these updates, approximately 40 percent of Dollar General stores in the Cleveland city limits offer fresh produce,” the company said Tuesday.

Investing in the Future of Food: Could rising popularity of fresh meals trigger SKU rationalization? - FoodNavigator-USA.com

fresh.indah.link

As retailers evaluate how best to meet this rising demand, FreshRealm founder Michael Lippold believes they will stock more fresh ready-to-heat and ready-to-cook options like the prepped perishables his firm helps food industry partners develop and fulfill.

If they do, CPG players could see increased SKU rationalization or a reverse-migration of consumers who recently returned to the center of the store back to the perimeter.

The retail store of the future

Even though many consumers returned to the center store for shelf stable items during the early days of the pandemic, Lippold believes the perimeter will see a resurgence as consumers seek convenient, healthy alternatives to constantly cooking.

And in particular, he says, shoppers will want pre-made meals that are ready to cook or simply need to be re-heated.

“The retail store of the future is going to be more about meal shopping instead of ingredient shopping, and this is not just a future vision you. You are seeing a lot of retailers invest big in this category now,” Lippold said.

As such, he predicts, retailers eventually will offer dozens of fresh meals organized by cuisine, cooking style and the number of people they feed.

Lippold’s prediction is based in part on what he sees in the UK, where he says the concept of shopping by meal already is the norm, and on the wild popularity of the bagged salad category in the US.

“The bagged salad category is $5.5b in the US and when you do a quick mental poll of how many meals do we eat salads versus how many meals do we eat that are not salads, we eat a lot more non-salad meals than salad meals,” he said. “We are looking at a $45b market at some point in the coming years.”

‘Our kitchen is the new coffee shop’

As illustrated by the bagged salad category as well as the rise of grocerants and grab-and-go fresh options over the last few years, consumers already were primed to adopt this trend before the pandemic began, but Lippold believes changes designed to slow the spread of the coronavirus will turbocharge consumer interest in convenient, fresh and nutritious options.

“As much as our kitchen is the new coffee shop or the new restaurant, and we are liking cooking, I don’t think we want to cook seven days a week or 14 meals a week, and this is the problem that we are ultimately trying to solve,” he said, explaining that FreshRealm and fresh meals are eliminating the ‘cooking’ and making meals more about being with family and enjoying food.

Will there be more SKU rationalization?

Many retailers are just starting to bring back products that the sidelined during the pantry-stocking phase of the pandemic to focus on essentials, but Lippold’s prediction comes to fruition some of those products might be cut again to make space for more fresh options.

“Do we really need all those individual ingredients if we can get them in a real simple combined meal solution?” asked Lippold.

Even if retailers reduce the variety of shelf-stable products or fresh ingredients, the quantity and variety of fresh meals they can offer – at least at the beginning – likely will be limited by refrigeration space and capacity to make the meals in house.

FreshRealm can help with the second part of this conundrum, Lippold said, noting the company workers closely with retailers across channels to develop, prep and fulfill fresh meal solutions from its four facilities across the nation.

As demand rises, Leppold adds that FreshRealm is ready to bring on a fifth facility within the next 18 months. He also notes that the company will keep a watchful eye on industry trends and be ready to pivot if necessary.

“There have been a lot of twists and turns in the fresh meal space over the last seven years, but I think we are going to get there anyway. I think COVID just really opened a window for us, and I think the next two to three years will be a really exciting time for the company,” he said.

Currency Gyrations Spark Fresh Bets From Investors - The Wall Street Journal

How many dollars €1 buys, quarterly range

Swings in currencies have breathed life back into the foreign-exchange market, attracting investors who bet that some countries can outgrow others in the pandemic.

After currencies had their quietest year on record in 2019, they are now on track for their highest year of volatility since 2017, according to an index managed by Deutsche Bank. One measure of those swings: Through the first three quarters, the dollar has gained or lost at least 1% against the euro during 13 trading sessions, the greatest instance of wide daily swings since 2016, according to FactSet.

The foreign-exchange market was jolted by the coronavirus selloff in the spring when the financial system was under strain and dollars became scarce. The tentative global economic rebound has generated a return trip for some currencies. The dollar has moved sharply up and down this year, but remains just 2.4% weaker against a basket of currencies measured by the ICE U.S. Dollar index. Meanwhile, uncertainty about the pandemic—and government responses to it—are keeping currency traders on their toes.

Increased volatility creates opportunities for investors since bigger moves can generate higher returns. Fixed-income investors who struggled to generate profits from owning bonds with negative or very low interest rates have edged into currencies as a way to boost returns.

Kaspar Hense, senior portfolio manager at BlueBay Asset Management, is using forward currency contracts, which are agreements to buy or sell a currency at a pre-established rate on a pre-established date, to boost his fixed-income fund returns.

“Our focus the last few years has been rather low on foreign exchange,” said Mr. Hense. “It is gaining more influence on our thinking.”

Currencies are on track for their highest-volatility year since 2017.

He is using forwards to bet that China’s yuan will continue to strengthen against the U.S. dollar. The yuan has strengthened 3% in the past few months as China’s recovery from the coronavirus has taken hold—–its best quarterly performance since the first quarter of 2008.

One reason for the increased currency volatility is that central banks, historically one of the most important drivers of currency markets, have collectively slashed rates to near zero or below. That has made it less clear which currency should strengthen relative to others, said Ugo Lancioni, head of global currency at Neuberger Berman.

Quarterly Markets Review

He thinks rebounds are in store for some of the most volatile currencies, in part due to a better economic recovery outside the U.S. The Norwegian krone and the Mexican peso are down 7% and 15.4%, respectively, against the dollar and have more room to rebound, he said.

With central banks on the sidelines, currency investors are focusing on how much fiscal support governments have given—and will continue to give—and which economies will perform best. That has helped explain the dollar’s recent slide versus the euro, which came after stimulus talks in Congress failed to come up with fresh spending.

The uneven pace of economic recovery, as well as the coming U.S. election and the U.K.’s end-of-year break from the European Union’s trade policies, are likely to keep currencies volatile. The British pound has swung wildly in recent weeks, rising against the dollar to $1.34 before quickly retreating to around $1.28, around where it traded Wednesday.

Investors often borrow currencies from countries with low interest rates to buy ones from countries with higher interest rates, picking up the difference in a strategy known as a carry trade. Emerging-markets central banks slashed interest rates alongside developed markets, leaving fewer currencies investors could get higher interest rates from.

Still, investors see opportunity. David Zahn, head of European fixed income at Franklin Templeton, has added positions betting that Polish zloty and the Czech koruna will strengthen against the euro. An EU recovery fund that will aid regional economic recovery is likely to help Poland and the Czech Republic, which tend to grow more quickly than bigger EU states.

Despite many pundits predicting that the U.S. dollar would lose its global dominance, the coronavirus pandemic has only served to demonstrate how vital it remains to the international financial system. A true sneakerhead wants to bring a ‘fresh’ style to Congress

For Cameron Webb, the sneakers are more than just fancy footwear

Posted September 30, 2020 at 6:30am

Kamala Harris broke the internet when she stepped off a jet sporting a pair of Chuck Taylors (and later Timberland boots). Ed Markey wore vintage Nikes during his Senate primary. But campaign watchers haven’t seen anything yet.

Cameron Webb is a true sneakerhead, and this is his shoe story.

Webb, a 37-year-old candidate for Virginia’s 5th District, began his love affair with kicks as a teenager, when he could buy his own. Growing up as one of six children in his household, a sneaker habit wasn’t something his parents would indulge.

“My parents were those parents who [said] you get the $39.99 shoes,” says Webb. When he turned 16, he got a job at the athletic shoe store Finish Line, so “I could stay fresh,” he says.

As a player on his high school basketball team, he wanted to emulate the pros he saw on the court. “The very first pair of shoes that I splurged on were Gary Payton’s ‘The Glove,’” named after the star point guard for the Seattle SuperSonics. From there, it was on to the “foamposites” that “D.C. kids loved,” according to Webb, who grew up in Spotsylvania, Virginia.

One Holy Grail for sneaker collectors eluded him until college: the Air Jordans.

When it comes to the athletic shoe world, Jordans are king. The iconic brand made its debut in 1985, helping their namesake Michael Jordan become a billionaire. Today some of the classic editions sell out in mere seconds when released online.

For Webb, they’ve been crucial in both his professional and personal lives.

“The joy of virtual campaigning is that I get to wear Jordans in the office,” he says of his bid for Congress as the coronavirus pandemic continues. He even has a pair of Jordan 1 slippers he scoots around in.

While running for Congress, Cameron Webb has worn, from left to right, the Jordan 11 “Georgetown,” the Jordan 9 “Birmingham Barons,” and Jordan 1 slippers.

As for the personal stuff, “I met my wife over some shoes,” he says. It was his first year as an undergrad at the University of Virginia, and he wanted to approach a young woman from his chemistry class. “What am I going to say?” he thought, before noticing she happened to be wearing the same pair of Jordan 16s he was.

“I was like, ‘Hi, nice shoes,’” says Webb. That “corny” line didn’t earn him a date, and may even have put him in the self-described “friend zone” for a couple years. But it started the conversation. (These days Webb is back at U.Va. as director of health policy and equity at the medical school, and his wife, Leigh-Ann Webb, is a doctor too.)

The sneakers are more than just fancy footwear or an obsession. When Webb’s apartment burned down in medical school, he realized how much his collection meant. “I lost every pair of shoes I’d ever had,” he says. “It was heartbreaking.” When he eventually started buying again, he made sure to get another pair of Nike Air Max 97s, which hold a special meaning because of his fraternity. Decked out in gold and black, they bear the colors of Alpha Phi Alpha, the oldest Black fraternity in America.

Now that Webb is campaigning for Congress, he finds inspiration in his wide range of Jordans. His Airness was known for his clutch play in the fourth quarter. That’s a mentality Webb wants to emulate as he enters the October home stretch of his own race, trying to pull off a win for Democrats in a sprawling district that supported President Donald Trump by double digits in 2016.

“I don’t just buy any shoe or any colorway,” says Webb. “All the Jordans that I buy are because of something about an iconic Jordan moment.”

Take his “Georgetown” edition Jordan 11s, which represent the final minute of the 1982 NCAA championship. Or the Jordan Bred 4, which MJ wore in the 1989 NBA playoffs when he hit a game-winner simply known as “the shot.”

“I’ve always prided myself on my ability to outwork people,” says Webb, crediting his family and faith for the ability to stay energetic and grounded. It’s that “mamba mentality. I like to believe that I bring some skill and ability and talent, but that’s nothing without the hard work. So that’s what I keep focused on. I use the same perspective that I had for sports and bring it into this.”

Virginia Tech launches novel food pantry with fresh meal kits - Roanoke Times

fresh.indah.link

BLACKSBURG — Mackenzie Roach lost her job at Virginia Tech’s gym when the coronavirus pandemic forced the university to shutter in the spring.

“I’m kind of living off-campus, balancing bills with not having my job anymore, and still trying to kind of survive,” said Roach, a 21-year-old chemical engineering student.

When Roach reached out to the Dean of Students Office for an emergency grant, the university offered an extra lifeline: Would she be interested in being part of a pilot meal-kit program along the lines of Blue Apron and HelloFresh?

“I was like, yeah, this sounds great,” Roach said. “Let’s do it.”

Called The Market of Virginia Tech, the program unveiled Wednesday will serve up to 75 students this semester with weekly packages of fresh produce and either vegetarian, poultry or beef protein options. Participants can order their meal kits online, and pick them up at the Graduate Life Center in Blacksburg. Tech says the kits provide enough food for about a week’s worth of meals.

The inspiration for a new breed of food bank came even before the pandemic unraveled the economy.

A 2019 study from a Tech professor found that 29% of undergraduates and 35% of graduate students on campus experience low or very low food security, a rate on par with other colleges.

The federal government defines low security as “reduced quality, variety or desirability of diet” and very low security as “disrupted eating patterns and reduced food intake.”

Mehul and Hema Sanghani, who met as undergraduates at Tech, had been interested in focusing some of their philanthropy around issues of hunger and food insecurity.

In August 2019, the couple celebrated their anniversary by visiting The Store, a free grocery in Nashville, Tennessee, to learn about how it worked and about different food pantry concepts.

Tech professor Ralph Hall’s food insecurity study at the university clinched the Sanghanis’ decision to donate $1.5 million to launch the initiative.

“The numbers were pretty staggering to us,” Hema Sanghani said in a Zoom interview Tuesday about the Tech study. Recent data from other studies show how widespread hunger is in America.

“These numbers were provided prior to the pandemic, so we can only imagine that we will see an increase in those numbers, if we haven’t already,” she said.

While the couple said they never personally struggled with food insecurity, both grew up with parents who had immigrated from India and experienced challenges in their new country.

“In elementary school growing up I had a number of friends that were part of the free lunch program,” said Mehul Sanghani, a member of Tech’s Board of Visitors, who while growing up helped clean a Red Carpet Inn motel his parents ran in Blacksburg.

“There are a lot of jokes about cafeteria foods, but I watched these kids devour those lunches because it might represent the only meal that they would get that day.”

Frank Shushok, vice president for student affairs at Tech, said the goal for The Market is to provide a sustainable model to address hunger on campus, in addition to existing local and college food pantries.

“I think all of these are needed, but I think this is a unique and different approach that adds to the many components that are needed to address food insecurity in our community,” he said.

Last year, Hall’s food insecurity study prompted graduate students Anurag Mantha and Cortney Steele to launch a GoFundMe campaign to buy $200 grocery cards for students in need.

Mantha on Tuesday said the campaign, Food Access for Students, has helped 128 students. The campaign has reached its $10,000 goal and both he and Steele are wrapping up their studies at Tech.

Mantha said he’s hoping to donate the remaining gift cards to the Dean of Students Office for The Market program. Gift cards may be of particular use for some students this semester after classes switch to remote learning after Thanksgiving break.

“So we all could work toward the same goal, which is to serve students in need,” Mantha said. “I think it is a wonderful program, the way it is designed.”

Mehul Sanghani said the initial vision was to have an in-person market. The pandemic threw a wrench in that concept. He noted that the Marketplace, with online ordering and a weekly pick-up, is “highly supportive of not only social distancing, but it also offers a greater degree of anonymity and dignity,” which he said is a “unique hallmark of this effort.”

For Roach, the engineering student, the continuation of the weekly meal kits into the fall semester “would help me out immensely.” She lives off-campus with her sister, a sophomore, and has been able to expand her culinary horizons recently with a Mediterranean chicken shawarma dish.

Roach said she hopes her story can inspire others to seek help.

“I know students that may be in this position are a little ashamed and maybe don’t want to shine the spotlight on them or the situation.” Roach said. “So sharing my story, hopefully if that brings awareness to the resources, or just to help them feel that they’re not alone and that it’s okay, especially right now … that it’s okay, and that there’s people to help.”

Amazon Fresh to open one of its first stores in Long Beach in December - Long Beach Press Telegram

fresh.indah.link

One of the country’s first Amazon Fresh grocery stores is coming to Long Beach.

City Councilmember Stacy Mungo, who represents Long Beach’s Fifth District, announced late Monday, Sept. 28, that Amazon Fresh will occupy the former site of Haggen Food & Pharmacy, 6235 E. Spring St.

The store is expected to open in December, Mungo wrote in her newsletter.

A spokesperson for Amazon confirmed the new store but declined to share further details.

The first Amazon Fresh grocery store opened to the public earlier this month in Woodland Hills. The stores feature decent prices (like 15-cent bananas) and Dash Carts, which use inward-facing cameras to track what’s in the basket and allow customers to skip the traditional checkout line; shoppers also have the choice to use a conventional cart and cashier.

The store will also offer free same-day delivery and pick-up for Amazon Prime members.

Mungo wrote that, according to Amazon, the store is expected to create “hundreds of high-quality local jobs.”

The Spring Street lot has been empty since 2015, when Haggen filed for bankruptcy and closed less than a year after it moved into the property.

But it appears Amazon Fresh is just beginning its journey into the brick-and-mortar business. The brand has opened stores in North Hollywood, Irvine, Northridge and Naperville, Illinois, on an online-only basis for the time being; an Amazon spokesperson did not have details about their in-store openings.

In addition to those and the Long Beach location, Amazon Fresh stores will also come soon to Whittier; Oak Lawn, Illinois; and Schaumburg, Illinois.

“It’s been a long time coming and our residents and neighbors have been waiting patiently,” Mungo wrote. “I’m excited to see a new grocery concept serving our community and providing essential jobs right when we need them most.”

Simon Property Group Declares Fresh Dividend; Yield is 8.1% - Motley Fool

fresh.indah.link

A severe downturn in shopping mall traffic isn't deterring Simon Property Group (NYSE:SPG) from maintaining its dividend. On Tuesday, the company -- which is the top mall real estate investment trust (REIT) in the U.S. -- said its board of directors has declared a common stock distribution of $1.30 per share. This is to be handed out on Oct. 23 to investors of record as of Oct. 9.

The amount matches the previous dividend, which was dispensed in late July. Previous to that, however, Simon was more generous, with a $2.10 per share disbursement.

It almost goes without saying that the company's major challenge is surviving and thriving inside the coronavirus pandemic. Mandatory shutdowns of retail stores earlier in the pandemic have badly affected their operations, and fresh closures could be looming given the recent upturn in cases in many locations.

Shoppers in a mall, toting bags.

That said, Simon hasn't done too badly considering its far-from-ideal circumstances. It's still well in the black in terms of funds from operations (FFO, considered the most important profitability metric for REITs), and it has done better than many peer landlords in collecting rent from tenants. And for the moment, tenants in the vast majority of stores the company owns had resumed operations.

Meanwhile, Simon has taken the fairly unorthodox step of investing into some of its larger tenants. It was part of a consortium of investors acquiring the bankrupt Forever 21, among other notable retail fashion brands, and is participating in another retailer rehabilitation project, J.C. Penney.

On Tuesday, Simon's share price dipped by 2.7%, exceeding the declines of the broader stock market on the day.

Will Smith and some of his cast members on “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” reunited earlier this month to tour the famous mansion for the 30th anniversary of the sitcom.

Smith, 52, was joined by DJ Jazzy Jeff, Tatyana Ali, Karyn Parsons, Daphne Maxwell Reid and Joseph Marcell.

For fans lucky enough to snag the Airbnb deal once booking started on Tuesday, the home is available to rent for only five dates next month for $30.

On Monday, a video tour of the mansion aired.

Smith and Jeff, 55, who played onscreen best friends, met up before the rest of the cast to take photos and shoot videos.

“This was the first time @djjazzyjeff got to spend time in the @freshprince mansion without gettin tossed!” the “I Am Legend” star joked in a caption of him and the DJ referring to their troublemaker characters.

Prior to entering the mansion, the duo did their characters’ signature handshake.

“Alright I’ll stay. I know this is supposed to be for other people but I need this for myself,” the “Bad Boys” star joked when they got inside.

Memorabilia was scattered throughout the home.

Some of the rooms replicated the set where the stars actually filmed the indoor scenes. Only the facade of the building was used on the sitcom.

The mansion is also in the Los Angeles, Calif., neighborhood Brentwood, although it was marketed to be in Bel Air.

Exclusive: Google, Fitbit deal set to win EU okay after fresh concessions - sources - Reuters

fresh.indah.link

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Alphabet’s Google is set to win EU antitrust approval for its $2.1 billion purchase of fitness tracker maker Fitbit to take on Apple and Samsung in the wearable technology market, people familiar with the matter said.

The world’s most popular internet search engine on Tuesday offered fresh concessions to the European Commission in a bid to address concerns the deal could entrench Google’s power in online advertising and boost its trove of data.

Google said it had offered to restrict the use of Fitbit data for Google ads and would also tighten the monitoring of that process, confirming a Reuters report. The offer is based on a July proposal.

“We’re also formalizing our longstanding commitment to supporting other wearable manufacturers on Android and to continue to allow Fitbit users to connect to third party services via APIs (application programming interfaces) if they want to,” Google said in a statement.

Third parties will also continue to have access to Fitbit users’ data, with users’ consent.

The concessions, reported earlier by Reuters, are set to clear the way for the deal to be approved, the people said.

The Commission, which is scheduled to decide on the deal by Dec. 23, declined to comment. Its decision could come earlier than the deadline.

The EU competition enforcer will now seek feedback from rivals and customers before deciding whether to accept Google’s concessions, demand more, or either clear or block the detail.

Last month, it rejected Google’s pledge not to use the fitness tracker’s data for advertising purposes in a bid to address competition concerns, saying that it was insufficient.

The deal has drawn criticism from healthcare providers, wearables rivals and privacy advocates.

Fitbit, once the leader in the wearable devices market, had a 3% share of the global wearables market as of the first quarter of 2020, lagging behind Apple’s 29.3% share, as well as Xiaomi, Samsung and Huawei, data from market research firm International Data Corp showed.

The Commission recently asked Google’s rivals and customers about interoperability issues, what technical steps Google could take to foreclose competition to Fitbit to increase its sales, and what could prompt it to do so, according to a person familiar with the matter.

It also asked about issues related to digital healthcare and the kind of data Google needs, and where the U.S. company could acquire it, the person said, suggesting concessions may be needed in these two areas.

New Evacuations Ordered as Two Wildfires Erupt in Northern California - The New York Times

fresh.indah.link

LOS ANGELES — California’s famed wine country, already suffering an economic blow brought on by the coronavirus pandemic and covered in smoke for weeks, is on fire again.

The state’s losses were mounting on Monday as two new wildfires burned out of control, killing three people in Shasta County, the sheriff said. And in wine country, the famous Chateau Boswell winery was gone, a community of tiny homes for homeless people has burned, and an untold number of houses were feared lost.

For residents, still haunted by fires that tore through the area three years ago, destroying thousands of homes and killing dozens of people, the wildfires that exploded on Sunday were as familiar as they were terrifying.

“We’ve evacuated and we are watching the news and watching my district burn again,” Susan Gorin, a Sonoma County supervisor, said Monday morning from a hotel in Novato where she had evacuated to. “I fear that it’s heading into those areas that lost homes and were rebuilt, and I fear they will burn again.”

The two fast-moving blazes, the Zogg Fire in Shasta County and the Glass Fire in Napa and Sonoma Counties, are uncontained and had burned more than 67,000 acres by Monday night, prompting new evacuation orders for thousands of people as the year’s grueling wildfire season wore on.

The new burst of fires comes as the West Coast struggles to recover from one of the worst seasons on record, even with months to go until the rainy season. Wildfires this year have left at least 40 people dead, destroyed more than 7,000 structures and scorched more than five million acres in California, Oregon and Washington. Experts have linked the devastating fire season to climate change, saying it is part of a long-term trend of more frequent and disastrous blazes in the West.

“As of right now there’s zero containment,” Jimmy Zanotelli, a public information officer with the Shasta County Sheriff’s Department, said of the fatal Zogg Fire, whose cause was unknown. “We’re still seeing some fire growth and some critical fire rates of spread, so it’s been a challenge.”

In a news conference on Monday, Gov. Gavin Newsom of California said a “substantial” number of structures, including wineries, had been damaged. Speaking of the history of fires in the area, he said there was “a lot of consternation in and around that region that has been hit over and over and over again.”

In wine country, residents spoke of terrifying nighttime evacuations on Sunday as the flames bore down.

In the Oakmont area of Santa Rosa, residents of Los Guilicos Village, a community of tiny homes for formerly homeless people and those suffering from mental illness and substance abuse disorders, were forced to evacuate at about 9 p.m.

Among them was Carmen Almejo, 53, who fled with her dog, a Chihuahua named Carmencita. All she brought was a sweatshirt for herself, a sweatshirt for her dog, some dog food and water.

“I was very scared,” she said from an evacuation center. “When we were going in the van, we could see the flames and it was scary. I’ve never been so scared in my life.”

As day broke on Monday, residents learned that much of the village had burned to the ground. Ms. Almejo said she spent the morning taking long walks with Carmencita to calm her nerves.

Across the street from Los Guilicos Village on Sunday night, Oakmont Gardens, a senior assisted living center, was evacuating hundreds of residents, some in wheelchairs and others using walkers. “That was amazing that they got everyone out of there,” said Chris Grabill, who runs Los Guilicos Village. “There were vans and city buses filled with elderly, vulnerable people.”

At the CrossWalk Community Church in Napa, which was designated as an evacuation center, the line stretched out the door on Monday afternoon, as evacuees gathered under tents to seek shade from the near triple-digit temperatures.

For many residents, it was not even the first time they had to flee a fire this year. Kristi Horn, who works at Pacific Union College in Angwin, had to evacuate in August after a lightning siege sparked several fast-moving fires. This time, she had to pack up and leave around 5 a.m. Sunday.

“I keep joking I want to move to Florida because you still get coastal access to the beach and you have several days to plan for a hurricane,” Ms. Horn said. “For fires, you’re woken up in the middle of the night.”

Jennifer Rhodes, 68, said she left her home in Deer Park early Sunday morning after a neighbor knocked on her door.

“I never unpacked from the last fire because they said the next three months was fire season,” said Ms. Rhodes, a retiree. She does not yet know if her home is still standing.

A spokeswoman for Cal Fire, the state’s firefighting agency, said the cause of the Glass Fire in wine country had not been determined. But some residents reported hearing explosions just as the fire ignited, suggesting that the cause may have been propane tanks, said Michael Mann, chief executive of WineCountry Media, a tourism and e-commerce company.

Everyone in his industry, he said, was scrambling on Monday to find out how much damage the fires had inflicted. “Most winery owners are trying to figure out if their properties are still there,” he said.

Meteorologists warned of more fire-prone conditions this week, after repeated heat waves and weeks of windy weather this summer. Over the weekend, the National Weather Service placed the greater Bay Area under a “red flag warning” because of dry and windy conditions and low humidity; the service extended the warning into Monday evening.

Lynne Tolmachoff, a spokeswoman for Cal Fire, said that about 8,500 homes, or 12,000 people, were under evacuation orders, and that about 1,500 firefighters were battling the blazes.

As a precaution, the utility company Pacific Gas and Electric said it had shut off power on Sunday in portions of the North Valley and Northern and Central Sierra regions, affecting about 65,000 customers. Power was expected to be restored by the end of the day Monday for the majority of customers.

Ms. Gorin, the county supervisor, was among those living in the areas under evacuation orders. But on Sunday night, well before the orders were issued, she saw the fire burning and started packing.

“I brought every photograph I could get my hands on,” she said, adding that she also brought with her jewelry and her computer.

“In general, people are exhausted,” said Ms. Gorin, who lives in Santa Rosa’s Oakmont neighborhood and lost her home in the 2017 fires. “They are tired of smoke. We’ve had smoke overlaying us for the last three weeks, and the skies are just beginning to clear.”

She said she has been living in a rented house while her home was being rebuilt, and she feared she might lose it again. She also feared for her constituents, and said many probably lost their homes on Sunday night. But it will likely be days until officials will be able to reach the area and survey the damage, she said.

Historically, fire seasons in California began around June and July and lasted into October. But the seasons have been growing longer.

“The last several years with the drought and lack of rainfall, we have had a very dry vegetation which is extremely receptive to burning, so we have not been having that closure that we normally would have in early fall,” Cheryl Buliavac, a spokeswoman at Cal Fire, said. “It’s been a year-round fire season.’

In wine country, officials have improved their alert system for residents in danger, and have positioned cameras on mountaintops to detect fires earlier.

“The information flow is better, but the sense of dread is not,” Lynda Hopkins, a Sonoma County supervisor, said.

On Monday, she said, a familiar sense of anxiety had set in. “It’s just numbing at this point, the number of fires up here. What’s eerie about this is it feels so much like 2017.”

Tim Arango reported from Los Angeles, Johnny Diaz from Miami, and Carly Stern from Napa, Calif. Concepción de León contributed reporting from New York.
