Biden's fresh economic take on Covid - POLITICO - Politico

With Susannah Luthi and Dan Goldberg

Editor’s Note: POLITICO Pulse is a free version of POLITICO Pro Health Care's morning newsletter, which is delivered to our subscribers each morning at 6 a.m. The POLITICO Pro platform combines the news you need with tools you can use to take action on the day’s biggest stories. Act on the news with POLITICO Pro.

— President-elect Joe Biden's newly named economic advisers are poised to sound a different tone on the pandemic than President Donald Trump's team.

— Biden's also set to inherit a resurgent drug addiction crisis that experts warn has worsened during the pandemic.

— Major decisions are looming on Covid-19 vaccine distribution, with significant authority falling to the states.

IN PRAISE OF JOANNE KENEN — POLITICO's esteemed health care editor is officially moving to a new role as editor at large, where she'll be doing more writing while staying closely involved in projects.

It's impossible to conceive of the health policy beat in Washington without acknowledging Joanne's role in shaping it. Joanne's hired several dozen health care editors and reporters who have since fanned out (including both PULSE co-authors and the author of the Washington Post's own health care newsletter), and she's a well-known speaker at outlets like KHN's "What the Health" podcast.

So what's next for the irrepressible Joanne? PULSE is eagerly anticipating her coming work. Meanwhile, if you've got tips on your own moves around the beltway, flag [email protected] and [email protected].

BIDEN's ECONOMIC TEAM: A SHARED FOCUS ON COVID, INEQUALITY The president-elect's picks for key White House economic positions, which were reported on Sunday, share a philosophy on prioritizing the virus and addressing disparities.

"Until COVID is controlled, we can't return to business as usual — one vs. the other is a false tradeoff," Heather Boushey, who leads the Washington Center for Equitable Growth and is set to join Biden's Council of Economic Advisers, tweeted last week.

Cecilia Rouse, tapped to be CEA chief, and Jared Bernstein, also chosen for a CEA seat, have similarly been vocal champions of more relief to prop up the economy amid the outbreak, as well as calling for targeted aid to the most vulnerable sectors.

That's a departure from Trump's economic team, which often battled with public health experts in the White House and repeatedly dismissed the risk of coronavirus surges.

THE HIRE THAT's GETTING THE MOST ATTENTION: NEERA TANDEN FOR OMB CHIEF — A Tanden-led OMB would likely play an outsized role in policymaking and could be a signal of how the White House will rely on executive authority to achieve its objectives, Biden allies told PULSE.

If Tanden gets the Senate-confirmed job — more on that below — she'd have her hands on all the major rules coming out of the Biden administration, a role drawing on her experience as leader of the Center for American Progress and as a veteran of two previous administrations.

She's also struck a pragmatic balance on policy, such as the liberal think tank’s rollout of a Medicare expansion plan last year that was less transformative than Medicare for All, seeking to preserve employer-sponsored health insurance. "I don't apologize for having a plan that meets progressive goals like universal coverage and addresses broad interests ... like lowering health care costs all while maintaining choice," Tanden said on POLITICO's "Pulse Check" podcast last year.

The pick got kudos from leading progressives like Stacey Abrams and Democrats who have worked with Tanden.

"Neera is formidable," said Brookings' Kavita Patel. "She knows her way around the West Wing, executive office and all the agencies — and her background in health makes her an incredible asset in the fight against COVID and its aftermath."

— She also understands the virus' toll. Tanden contracted Covid-19 this summer and has spoken about suffering days of fatigue, dealing with a hazy memory and grappling with the uncertainty about taking a turn for the worse.

"I ended up being ill for six weeks," Tanden wrote in USA Today in October. "It made it absolutely clear to me that the idea people infected with coronavirus are fine as long as it isn't fatal, or suffer a short, mild bout of illness when they contract the virus, is a misconception."

— But it's going to be a confirmation battle in a narrowly divided Senate. Tanden's outspoken criticism and often blunt remarks, including on Twitter, have made her a target of both the left and right. Zaid Jilani, a progressive journalist who worked as a staff writer on CAP's now-defunct ThinkProgress, shared criticism of Tanden's management style. "To manage a govt agency you can't constantly antagonize people publicly/privately," Jilani wrote.

"Neera Tanden, who has an endless stream of disparaging comments about the Republican Senators’ whose votes she’ll need, stands zero chance of being confirmed," tweeted Drew Brandewie, the communications director for Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas).

JEFF ZIENTS IN MIX TO BE COVID CZAR — Zients, who led OMB during the Obama administration and helped oversee the HealthCare.gov repair job, is a finalist to be Biden's manager of the coronavirus response, POLITICO Playbook first reported last week.

Zients also served as CEO of the Advisory Board, a health care research and consulting firm (where one of your co-authors previously worked, albeit with very limited exposure to Zients).

BIDEN’S OTHER HEALTH CRISIS — The president-elect will inherit not only a global pandemic but a resurgent drug addiction crisis that federal officials say is spiraling out of control, POLITICO's Dan Goldberg and Brianna Ehley report.

“Since the pandemic hit we have not been able to control the opioid epidemic,” Nora Volkow, the long-serving director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, said in an interview. “Our vulnerabilities have just gotten worse.”

More than 76,000 people died of a drug overdose between April 2019 and April 2020, according to the most recent preliminary federal data, the most ever recorded during a 12-month period.

— Just how much the pandemic has exacerbated the drug crisis this year is still coming into view. Ohio recorded 543 overdose deaths in May, the most ever in a single month. Oregon reported a 70 percent increase in the number of overdose deaths in April and May compared to the same two months in 2019. In Maine, overdose deaths during the first half of 2020 were up 27 percent from the previous year. Spikes have also been documented in Colorado, Kentucky and Louisiana.

THE VAX DISTRIBUTION PLAN — The Trump administration has told states that they have ultimate authority for determining who gets vaccinated first. It has also decided to allocate scarce early doses based on states’ total populations, forcing hard choices in states with a greater proportion of residents at high risk — including Black, Indigenous and Latino communities that have suffered disproportionate rates of hospitalization and death from Covid-19, POLITICO's Sarah Owermohle, Rachel Roubein and Zachary Brennan write.

Public health experts say that could undermine already shaky public confidence in the vaccine effort, whose success depends on convincing large numbers of Americans to get immunized.

“States are going to have to pick and choose who gets the first doses,” said Josh Michaud, an associate director for global health policy at Kaiser Family Foundation who has reviewed nearly every state’s distribution plan. “It’s very obvious that states are in different places when it comes to planning and identifying who those people are.”

MONCEF SLAOUI MAY DEPART SOON — The Operation Warp Speed head may step down from the government's coronavirus vaccine and treatment accelerator "by the end this year or early next year," he told Zachary in an interview last week.

MITCH McCONNELL: WE'LL SUSPEND GOP IN-PERSON LUNCHES — The Senate Majority Leader informed the GOP caucus of the decision Saturday afternoon amid the recent uptick of Covid cases, POLITICO's Marianne LeVine reports.

Senate Republicans have been holding socially distanced lunches in the Senate Hart building since May. Senate Democrats, meanwhile, have held their weekly caucus lunches over the phone.

— PULSE's question: Why were in-person lunches still going on amid the pandemic?

INDUSTRY GROUPS LINE UP FOR FINAL PUSH ON SURPRISE BILLING BAN — Insurers and employers are trying to capitalize on recent congressional talks around an end to “surprise” medical bills and other key reforms, POLITICO's Susannah Luthi and Rachel Roubein report.

Congressional leadership and health committees have met repeatedly in recent weeks to try to reach a long-elusive compromise amid the lame-duck window.

— Ad blitzes coming: A coalition of employers, insurers and unions is launching a D.C.-focused six-figure ad campaign accusing private equity health companies of helping to stymie the compromise reforms.

The move follows a letter last week from a broad coalition of employer groups urging Congress’ leaders to move a package with the end-of-year spending bill.

— Fresh optimism after a long, tiring ride. Retiring Senate HELP Chair Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) recently teamed up to tout a compromise between Alexander's sweeping reforms and Cassidy's more physician-friendly solution. While the lawmakers haven’t released legislative text yet, the recent leadership meetings have raised hopes that the hold-out House Ways and Means Committee will get on board with this proposal, Susannah and Rachel tell PULSE.

— The caveat: Neither chamber has passed legislation, and industry sources familiar with the meetings say that Ways and Means hasn’t signed off on a compromise yet. Lawmakers have a very narrow window to come up with an agreement to hitch a ride on a year-end package — even as staggering medical bills for coronavirus treatment have underscored the need for action.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION APPEALS APPROVAL OF ACA RUNAROUND PLAN — The Labor Department on Friday appealed a Texas district court’s approval of a plan that could let swathes of people leave Obamacare, and that has the backing of seven GOP state attorneys general as an alternative to the individual market, Susannah writes.

The plan was developed in 2018, when a Georgia data-marketing firm teamed up with a Texas company to forge a large self-insured health plan under federal employer laws that aren’t bound by the same stringent requirements as the Obamacare markets. In exchange for letting the Georgia firm LP Management Services track all their web data, people could sign up for the plan as qualifying employees.

The Labor Department had already axed the effort, but Judge Reed O’Connor — known for his high-profile rulings favored by the Trump administration — overruled the department, saying the concept mirrored the Trump administration’s association health plans.

CDC advisers have called an emergency meeting for this week to vote on who should get Covid-19 vaccines first, CNN's Maggie Fox and John Bonifield report.

Every open bed inside a Wisconsin hospital fighting coronavirus is a "gift," WaPo's Lenny Bernstein reports.

From Brazil to Yemen, the Lancet offers a tribute to some of the physicians around the globe who have died battling the pandemic.

Motel 6 signs with new ad agency to ‘shine a fresh, new light’ on brand after Richards Group fallout - The Dallas Morning News

fresh.indah.link

Motel 6 has officially replaced The Richards Group with a new advertising company, inking a deal to work with Kansas City-based independent agency Barkley.

The Carrollton-based lodging company ended its relationship in October with The Richards Group over founder Stan Richards’ description of a new ad campaign idea as being “too Black.” Richards’ company had developed Motel 6′s iconic “We’ll leave the lights on for you” campaign.

In a statement, G6 Hospitality CEO Rob Palleschi described its relationship with Barkley as an opportunity for evolution. G6 Hospitality is Motel 6′s parent company.

“Motel 6 is an iconic brand with a 58-year history leading the economy lodging segment. A large part of that success has been our commitment to keeping the light on for our guests and being there when and where they need us – and that has been a considerable advantage for us in a year like 2020,” Palleschi said.

“Still, you can’t continue to lead a category in today’s environment without evolving, which is why we are excited to be partnering with Barkley to advance our strategic vision for the brand and shine a fresh, new light on a legacy brand.”

Motel 6′s Adam Cannon, who took on the role of vice president of brand management a year ago, will manage the relationship with Barkley, according to the company. Barkley will work on marketing initiatives for Motel 6 in 2021, including a “return to travel” campaign as the COVID-19 pandemic drags out.

Motel 6 severed its relationship with The Richards Group after widely reported accounts of the meeting where Richards made the racial remarks. At least a half-dozen other longtime Richards Group clients quickly followed suit, including Home Depot, Keurig Dr Pepper, grocery store chain H-E-B, pest control firm Orkin and auto parts retailer Advance Auto Parts.

Backlash from clients over Richards’ comments ultimately prompted the firm’s namesake founder to announce he was firing himself that same week. Richards also noted that the exodus of paying clients meant the company would have to get smaller.

Ad industry leaders in Dallas expressed concern that companies wouldn’t be able to absorb the creative professionals who could lose employment at Richards Group, a leading independent agency in the city for decades.

The Richards Group’s Andrew Harper and Kyle Kelley recently took new positions at PMG’s Dallas office, the agency announced last week. In addition to Dallas, PMG has offices in Fort Worth, Austin, New York and London.

‘I’m Your Woman’ puts a fresh spin on the 1970s crime drama - ABC News

fresh.indah.link

Director Julia Hart couldn’t stop thinking about Tuesday Weld. She had just watched Michael Mann’s 1981 thriller “Thief” and Weld’s character Jessie had taken over her imagination. Where did she and the baby go? What was going through her mind?

In some ways, Jessie is just the girlfriend. She’s there to up the stakes for the main character and exits the frame when the action begins. It’s not uncommon in the genre. Just think of Michael Corleone closing the door on Kay at the end of “The Godfather.”

But, Hart thought, what if we followed the woman instead of the man? It wouldn't be revisionist or corrective, just a different path. And it was the beginning of the yearslong process of creating “I’m Your Woman,” which turns the lens on the suburban housewife who has to go on the run with a new baby when her criminal husband disappears. The film starring Rachel Brosnahan opens in select theaters Friday and will be available on Amazon Prime Video on Dec. 11.

“It’s not like I want ‘Thief’ to have followed Jessie,” Hart said. “The movie was so good that I couldn’t stop thinking about this character and the story of all these women. In these crime dramas, even though the women weren’t the main characters, they were amazing characters. They were complex and flawed and interesting and well performed and well written. They just didn’t get their own movie...That’s what inspired me to create Jean.”

Hart and her husband, producer Jordan Horowitz, got to work writing the script. And when Amazon Studio heads, who had been impressed with her superhero drama “Fast Color," asked what they wanted to make next, they had this ready to go.

And after a meeting with Brosnahan, she knew she’d found her Jean.

“She’s such a chameleon,” Hart said. “And she feels like a real woman. I think a lot of the women in the 70s movies did as well — not like someone who had been airbrushed and made to look perfect.”

The “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” star was all in. Despite her successes over the past few years, she’d been frustrated by the “one-dimensional” roles that were coming her way. Jean was a refreshing departure from that.

“Jean is a quiet woman’s action hero. That’s something that I’ve never seen before,” Brosnahan said. “And it’s a really nontraditional look at motherhood. Motherhood is more often than not, not the picture perfect journey we see on Instagram.”

The shoot was going to be hard. Hart knew she’d have her work cut out for herself directing her first car chase and big club scene with hundreds of background actors. But the biggest challenge would be the fact that they’d decided to work with real babies, who in the process of the chronological shoot would go from 6 to 8 months in age.

“I am constantly frustrated by how people treat babies like they’re not people both in real life and on film — like it’s fine to have a fake baby or it’s fine to have four different babies playing the same character,” Hart said. “We knew it was a big risk, but we felt like it was one worth taking. We wanted to commit to making the baby a character in the film who you could connect to and know.”

It added stress and time restrictions but also beauty and spontaneity to the shoot.

“There were times when things happened with those babies that we never could have expected,” Brosnahan said. “And that added a layer of magic to certain scenes.”

In one tense scene where Jean’s home is broken into and she has to hide in the closet and make a desperate phone call, the baby unexpectedly fell asleep in her arms.

“It added this layer of urgency,” Brosnahan said.

And although Hart is proud of the action sequences, the mother of two does not remember feeling more joy and exhilaration than knowing that they got a shot of the baby sleeping.

“Getting a baby to fall asleep in its period costume, in its period crib at the time when you’re scheduled to shoot it is a bit of a miracle,” Hart said.

There are exactly two of those miracle shots in the finished film.

Brosnahan also took on a different kind of role in “I’m Your Woman:" as producer. She’d been thinking about it for some time, “looking for a way to carve out a path for myself.” And she’s immensely grateful to Hart and Horowitz for giving her the opportunity.

“This is such a literal example, but most of the time you show up on the set as an actor having never seen what could be your house, the character’s house that they have lived in 30 years. And you’re showing up on day one and trying to pretend you’ve lived there for 30 years,” she said.

As a producer, she was involved in everything from script development to location scouting. When she showed up to her character’s house this time, she knew it already.

“It made me a better actor,” she said.

Hart has spent most of her career as a writer and filmmaker trying to convince studios that stories about women are worth telling. After years of fighting, she's finally starting to see the change.

“The studios are starting to really take female filmmakers and filmmakers of color more seriously,” Hart said. “It’s not just lip service anymore.”

Big Y opens Westfield Express Gas and Fresh Convenience Market - MassLive.com

fresh.indah.link

WESTFIELD — Big Y Foods Inc. is celebrating the opening of its 12th Big Y Express Gas and Fresh Convenience Market at 330 East Main St.

The convenience store is across Route 20 from Big Y’s World Class Market.

Big Y said it has been a part of the Westfield community since opening a supermarket on Silver Street in 1965. The Express is the chain’s third current location in Westfield. The others are a newly remodeled World Class Market at 1 East Silver St. and the grocery store at 175 East Main St.

The first Big Y Express opened in 2013 in Lee.

The 2,000-square-foot Big Y Express in Westfield has two pumping positions with 87, 89 and 93 octane gasoline and diesel. A free air machine is available for tire inflation.

Additional amenities include the Wide Awake bean-to-cup coffee bar, fresh muffins and doughnuts, grab-and-go salads and sandwiches, heat-and-eat entrees and breads, and Uno individual pizzas.

As in the supermarkets, Big Y Express supports locally produced items such as Whip City Jerky from Westfield and Harmony Springs Soda from Ludlow.

By next spring, Big Y will open an outdoor seating area adjacent to the store. Electric car charging stations are also available.

Big Y Express is open every day from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Fuel discounts are available for myBigY members: 5 cents a gallon with the card and additionally up to 25 cents per gallon based upon grocery purchases at any Big Y market.

Store manager Isaac Miranda started as a part-time cashier for Big Y. Having managed several other Big Y Express locations, he brings a wealth of experience to the new Westfield store, the company said.

“We are always looking to bring our customers even more, especially during this challenging year,” said Big Y President and CEO Charles L. D’Amour. “We are excited to not only help our customers save on their fueling needs but also make life easier by offering fresh convenience items that our customers can grab on the run. Each Big Y Express showcases our expertise in food and service along with fuel savings for all.”

Big Y has almost 12,000 employees and operates 85 stores throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut, including 71 supermarkets, Fresh Acres Market, Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors, and 12 Big Y Expresses.

The company was founded in 1936 by brothers Paul and Gerald D’Amour. It is named after an intersection in Chicopee where two roads converge to form a “Y.”

She was ready for a fresh start, now she’s got a fresh... - Renton Reporter

fresh.indah.link

For Trudie Dole, the pandemic has a silver lining.

She’d been interested in the AJAC Manufacturing Academy for over a year, but as a single mother of four it was hard to fit the classes into her schedule. Then her retail job was deemed nonessential and AJAC moved classes online, and Dole jumped at the opportunity.

“It was a pretty big challenge, having four kids at home and all of us doing remote learning! But even with the pandemic I was able to learn all sorts of new skills and get a job in the aerospace industry.”

A year ago Dole was looking for a change — she’d recently committed to sobriety, and after a friend introduced her to some manufacturing concepts and machines she decided she’d like to work at Boeing. She applied for a variety of entry-level positions, but her resume needed a boost. That’s when she heard about the programs at the Aerospace Joint Apprenticeship Committee.

“There are programs and scholarships to help people like me retrain and find better opportunities. I didn’t have a perfect past, but I’ve dealt with that issue and AJAC still welcomed me,” she says, encouraging others to consider advanced manufacturing. “There’s more out there than just retail and the food and beverage industry.”

Breaking barriers

During the 10-week AJAC Manufacturing Academy Dole learned how to read a micrometer, use callipers, read blueprints and brush up on math skills while earning college credits and exploring career pathways.

“I’d had a barrier to understanding math in the past, but the Manufacturing Academy gave me a solid foundation,” she says. “In my job at Aero-Plastics Incorporated I make quick calculations in my head all the time.”

Dole’s instructors at AJAC encouraged her to attend a virtual job fair where she had the opportunity to submit her resumĂ© to a variety of companies in Washington’s thriving advanced manufacturing industry and meet with potential employers. That’s where she connected with Aero-Plastics Incorporated, and eventually landed a job.

Soon her employer plans to train her on a machine, and then Dole hopes to take the AJAC Machinist Apprenticeship to earn her nationally-recognized Journey-Level Certificate. But even at her current job in shipping and receiving, Dole is engaged and empowered.

“I use a micrometer to measure materials and I feel confident with all the terminology,” she says. “It’s a good, consistent job. It gives me the security of a typical 9-5 office job, but it’s still active. I’m learning on the job every day.”

Washington’s advanced manufacturing employers are hungry for new talent, and the AJAC Manufacturing Academy is your first step to an exciting career. Funding streams are available to remove barriers and increase opportunities for all Washington residents. Learn more at ajactraining.org.

Paterson sets fresh record for daily Covid-19 cases - Paterson Times

fresh.indah.link

A fresh record has been set in the daily Covid-19 cases in Paterson, topping the previous record set a week earlier.

Municipal officials reported 301 new cases on Sunday. Previous daily case record was set on November 22 with 285 infections.

“The case count in Paterson continues to climb; I would urge those that are not practicing social distancing to start doing so. Also, it is very important to avoid social gatherings at this time. For those who may have come into close contact with someone with a SARS-CoV-2 infection, remain in quarantine and get tested 5 days after the last close contact,” said health officer Paul Persaud. “Testing before 5 days may result in a negative test. An early negative test may actually embolden someone to ease off prevention measures and eventually start spreading the infection. So, do not test before 5 days of last contact.”

Heath officials had predicted the second wave of the coronavirus would be worse than the first. In April, during the first wave of the pandemic, Paterson had a peak daily case count of 262.

355 people have died from Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.

Persaud also urged young people take the virus seriously. “It is also important that younger folks exercise personal responsibility and self-quarantine from the onset of symptoms to avoid spreading infection to those that are at risk of serious illness,” he said.

Municipal officials have put in place a testing regime and a contact tracing program to reduce the transmission of the virus.

A midnight curfew is also in place for businesses to curb late-night gathering at bars and nightclubs. But that has led to the growth of after-hours parties in various parts of Paterson.

Councilman Luis Velez said the double shooting that occurred early Sunday morning at 321 Market Street resulted from an after-hours party. When police responded to the shooting scene, they were met by a large crowd of people. Large gatherings spread the new coronavirus.

Velez said there has been a dearth of enforcement.

“Last night, I had a unit specifically going out to target after-hours locations throughout the city,” said public safety director Jerry Speziale. “We believe they are popping up and they are a problem. We’ll be focusing on them to stomp them out.”

Speziale said it’s difficult to locate the after-hours parties.

“I could see it and I’m not a cop,” said Velez. “They need to step up to the plate. The criminals are laughing.”

Speziale urged residents to report after-hours parties by calling police.

Speziale said residents can call (973) 910-1255 to report after-hours parties. He said residents should leave a message with location and other information. Information will be kept confidential, he said.

Global shares mixed after fresh records on Wall Street - The Associated Press

TOKYO (AP) — Global shares were mixed Monday on renewed caution despite a record high finish on Wall Street last week driven by hopes for a COVID-19 vaccine and relief for the global economy.

France’s CAC 40 fell 0.3% to 5,579.72 in early trading, while Germany’s DAX inched up less than 0.1% to 13,346.33. Britain’s FTSE 100 gained 0.6% to 6,403.93. U.S. shares were set to decline as Dow futures dropped 0.5% to 29,730.50. S&P 500 futures fell 0.4% to 3,623.38.

After Tokyo trading ended, Koichiro Miyahara, the head of the Tokyo Stock Exchange, resigned to take responsibility for a massive system glitch that shut down trading last month. The full-day outage on Oct. 1 was the worst ever for the world’s third largest exchange.

Japan Exchange Group, or JPX, the exchange’s parent, said it had accepted his resignation over the error that disabled the system called Arrowhead.

Trading resumed as normal the following day after repairs of malfunctioning computer systems. There was no sign the outage resulted from hacking or other cybersecurity breaches.

Akira Kiyota, JPX’s CEO, will take Miyahara’s place, the company said in a statement.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 dipped 0.8% to finish at 26,433.62, as markets throughout the region shed early gains. South Korea’s Kospi lost 1.6% to 2,591.34. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 slipped 1.3% to 6,517.80. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng edged down 2.0% to 26,361.96, while the Shanghai Composite slipped 0.5% to 3,391.76.

Stephen Innes, chief global market strategist at Axi, noted that despite ups and downs investors are looking toward the arrival of vaccines for a gradual return to business as usual.

“Vaccines offer the promise that the major disruptions of the pandemic will fade from the scene in 2021. Economic life will gradually heal; the world will start to move on from all the human suffering that the virus has wrought,” said Innes.

One bit of encouraging news for the region came in the purchasing managers’ index, or PMI, for China’s manufacturing sector, which showed the nation where the pandemic all started continues to recover, with its manufacturing sector growing.

Positive developments on the vaccine front have investors looking forward to progress in gaining control over the pandemic that plunged the global economy into its deepest slump since the 1930s. That optimism persisted last week even as one vaccine candidate suffered a setback and cases of coronavirus remain high around the world.

The University of Oxford and AstraZeneca have released positive test results about their vaccine. Hopes for a vaccine have offset concerns about spiking coronavirus cases in the U.S. and other parts of the world. U.S. states and European governments are re-imposing controls on business and travel as infection rates surge.

Worries are also growing in Asia, including Japan and South Korea, about another wave of infections. Tokyo is reporting several hundred new cases a day, often setting new records. The disease has killed more than 1.4 million people worldwide, according to data gathered by Johns Hopkins University.

The OPEC nations, led by Saudi Arabia, will be meeting virtually on Monday to decide, once again, how much oil their members should produce as lockdowns related to the coronavirus stifle demand for crude. They’re expected to extend production cuts well into the new year, in an effort to boost volatile oil prices.

The group has to reach agreement among its member countries and the additional members in the group known as OPEC Plus, which is led by Russia.

In energy trading, benchmark U.S. crude lost 67 cents to $44.86 a barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, fell 92 cents to $47.26 a barrel.

The U.S. dollar inched up to 104.33 Japanese yen from 104.07 yen. The euro cost $1.1976, up from $1.1962.

Maryland Christmas tree farm provides fresh air, holiday cheer - WTOP

fresh.indah.link

The holiday season is here and this year many families are heading to Christmas tree farms to pick out their trees despite the coronavirus pandemic.

Debbie Fleischmann and her grandchildren are among the hundreds of families that have stopped by Gaver Farm in Mt. Airy, Maryland, with a saw in hand.

“We have come out hunting for Christmas trees for years,” said Fleischmann, recalling her time growing up in Pennsylvania, where the family tradition began. “You get to decorate it and leave it up as long as you want and you’re in good shape.”

Gaver Farm’s Lisa Gaver said this year they have been busier than normal since opening their doors to Christmas tree shoppers on Friday.

Social distancing has been a top priority and masks are required, Gaver said.

The Frederick County farm has also spaced out certain areas as an additional precaution, changes Gaver said they were prepared to make.

“We have even doubled staff this year because of COVID and we have three of everything.”

Gaver Farm has been in business since 1984; so no task is too big, and with this being one of the only events not canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Gaver said she is glad to be able to help people find joy in a family-friendly activity.

“It’s fun for us in the tree season and we see a lot of people, so yep, we’re very thankful.”

Americans increasingly turning to fresh Christmas trees during pandemic: 'It really is a memory maker' - Fox News

fresh.indah.link

Ani Sirois, a respiratory nurse, has spent months caring for coronavirus patients at a Portland, Oregon, hospital, and she's only getting busier as infections — and hospitalizations — surge before the holidays.

But on a recent sunny day, COVID-19 seemed far away as she, her husband and their 2-year-old daughter roamed a Christmas tree farm in search of the perfect evergreen for a holiday season unlike any other. The family was tree-shopping nearly a week before Thanksgiving and, for the first time, they were picking their own tree instead of buying a pre-cut one.

“It’s nice to have home be a separate safe space away from the hospital, and whether we can have a gathering with family or not, I know we’ll have our own little tree with the purple lights, and that’ll be something small to look forward to,” she said.

The real Christmas tree industry, which has been battling increased interest in artificial trees, is glad to see that more Americans appear to be flocking to fresh-cut evergreens this season, seeking a bright spot amid the virus' worsening toll.

ROCKY THE CHRISTMAS TREE OWL IS RETURNED TO THE WILD

It's early in the season, but both wholesale tree farmers and small cut-your-own lots are reporting strong demand, with many opening well before Thanksgiving. Businesses say they are seeing more people and earlier than ever.

At some pick-your-own-tree farms, for example, customers sneaked in well before Thanksgiving to tag the perfect tree to cut down once the business opened. As demand surges, big box stores are seeking fresh trees up to a week earlier than last year, and Walmart is offering free home delivery for the first time.

“The season is running approximately six to seven days ahead of what we've seen in the past. We’ve never seen the demand like we’ve had this year,” said McKenzie Cook, who ships between 1.8 million and 2 million trees a year combined from McKenzie Farms in Oregon and Happy Holiday Christmas Trees in North Carolina.

A number of reasons are driving the uptick in interest. More Americans are staying home for the holidays amid pandemic restrictions and are realizing that for the first time in years — or maybe ever — they will be home to water a fresh-cut tree. With holiday parades and festivals canceled, stir-crazy families also are looking for a safe way to create special memories.

MELANIA TRUMP WELCOMES CHRISTMAS TREE AT WHITE HOUSE

Plus, fresh-cut Christmas trees are largely displayed outside, where there's a lower risk of viral spread, said Marsha Gray, executive director of the Christmas Tree Promotion Board.

The national organization says industry research tells them many people who put up an artificial tree last year plan to buy a real tree this year, and most are citing the pandemic as the reason.

“Yes, it’s a product, it’s a decoration that you put in your home, but getting a real tree involves the choosing, the hunting for it, the family outing. It really is a memory maker, it’s a day you spend together, and it really becomes much bigger than the tree itself,” Gray said. “It’s really making family memories and people really seem to gravitate to that right now.”

The growing interest in real trees comes after the industry has struggled to attract new, younger customers in recent years as more Americans buy artificial trees.

Between 75% and 80% of Americans who have a Christmas tree now have an artificial one, and the $1 billion market for fake trees has been growing by about 4% a year — despite them being reusable.

No one tracks annual sales of real trees because independent tree lots are so scattered, but those in the business estimate about 20 million trees or more are sold each year, most of them at big box stores such as Costco and Home Depot.

Oregon, the nation’s No. 1 supplier of fresh-cut trees, expects to ship nearly 6 million evergreens this season to places as far away as Japan and China. Other top tree exporters are Washington state, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

The fresh-cut tree industry in 2018 launched a social media campaign called “It's Christmas. Keep It Real!” to attract young families and media-savvy millennials.

This year, the Christmas Tree Promotion Board also asked Rob Kenney, creator of the “Dad, How Do I?” YouTube channel, to make an instructional video for newbies on how to shop for and put up a real tree, then keep it alive. It's gotten tens of thousands of views.

“We want to introduce real Christmas trees to young families and new buyers and create greater demand among those people who say, ‘I’m a little nervous about just taking a tree and dragging it into my house,'" Gray said.

It appears that message is breaking through as Americans seek a happier way to close out a difficult year.

Lee Farms, a sixth-generation family farm in Tualatin, Oregon, opened for the season a week earlier than last year. It sold more than 100 trees in the first four hours and was seeing new faces at a business that normally welcomes the same customers each year.

“It's almost a new — or a renewed — experience for a lot of families this year,” said Teagan Milera, co-owner of Lee Farms. “Having that real tree smells so good in your house, something to take care of and decorate together, that nothing beats that for the holiday season.”
