Armenia, Azerbaijan Trade Fresh Accusations of Karabakh Shelling - Voice of America

fresh.indah.link

YEREVAN/BAKU - Armenia and Azerbaijan once more accused each other of bombing residential areas on Saturday, in defiance of a pact to avoid the deliberate targeting of civilians in and around the mountain enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Shelling was reported by both sides within hours of the latest agreement to defuse the conflict, reached after talks in Geneva between the two countries' foreign ministers and envoys from France, Russia and the United States.

The agreement with the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group fell short of what would have been a fourth ceasefire since fighting began on Sept. 27. The death toll in the worst fighting in the South Caucasus for more than 25 years has surpassed 1,000 and is possibly much higher.

Nagorno-Karabakh is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but is populated and controlled by ethnic Armenians. About 30,000 people were killed in a 1991-94 war in the region.

The Nagorno-Karabakh Emergency and Rescue Service said the central market in Stepanakert, the enclave's largest city, had come under fire and that large parts of it had been burned.

Armenia's defense ministry said several civilians had been wounded in attacks on the city of Shushi, 15 km (9 miles) to the south, while the human rights ombudsman in Nagorno-Karabakh said a civilian in Martuni region had died when a shell hit his home.

Azerbaijan's defense ministry denied these accusations. It said that the regions of Terter, Aghdam and Aghjabedi had come under artillery fire, as had Gubadli, a town between the enclave and the Iranian border that was taken by Azeri troops this week. Azerbaijan's recent advances on the battlefield, which also extends to seven surrounding regions, have reduced its incentive to strike a lasting peace deal and complicated international efforts to broker a truce.

The conflict has also brought into sharp focus the increased influence of Turkey, an ally of Azerbaijan, in a former Soviet region considered by Russia to be within its sphere of influence. Russia also has a security alliance with Armenia.

In response to a request by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to outline the extent of Moscow's support, Russia's Foreign Ministry said it would provide "all assistance required" should the conflict spill onto "the territory of Armenia" — land that is outside the current conflict zone.

Nagorno-Karabakh's army says 1,166 of its soldiers have been killed since Sept. 27. Azerbaijan, which does not disclose its military casualties, updated its civilian death toll to 91. Russia has estimated as many as 5,000 deaths on both sides.

No fresh ceasefire commitment from Karabakh warring sides - Yahoo News

Shelling and rocket fire has damaged many civilian areas on both sides of the front line in Nagorno-Karabakh, like in Azerbaijani city Ganja

Armenia and Azerbaijan failed to reach agreement on a fresh ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict during talks in Geneva Friday, but did agree to measures to defuse tensions, including vowing not to target civilians, mediators said.

Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan and his Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov sat down for face-to-face talks aimed at reining in more than a month of clashes in the disputed region that have killed more than a thousand people.

Mediators from France, Russia and the US -- known as the "Minsk Group" -- said in a statement they had urged the sides to fully implement a previously agreed ceasefire.

Both sides, the statement said, had "engaged in an open and substantive exchange of views aimed at clarifying their negotiating positions" on sticking points in the ceasefire agreement reached in Moscow on October 10.

That and two subsequent ceasefire agreements -- the most recent one negotiated in Washington less than a week ago -- have failed to halt the bloodshed.

While Friday's statement made no mention of fresh ceasefire commitments, it said the sides had "agreed to take a number of steps on an urgent basis."

They had committed to "not deliberately target civilian populations or non-military objects in accordance with international humanitarian law," it said.

They had also agreed to "actively engage in the implementation of the recovery and exchange of remains on the battlefield."

- Possible prisoner exchanges -

Both sides also said that within a week they would deliver lists of currently detained war prisoners to the Red Cross "for the purposes of providing access and eventual exchange."

And finally they committed to provide written comments and questions related to discussions around introducing mechanisms to verify if a ceasefire was being upheld -- viewed as a key priority in the talks.

"The co-chairs will continue working with the sides intensively to find a peaceful settlement of the conflict," Friday's statement said.

The new round of diplomatic talks had initially been set to take place in Geneva Thursday, but they were postponed for a day amid a new spike in fighting.

"Every day of delay in achieving a functional ceasefire increases the likelihood of a dramatic escalation of civilian losses in this tragedy," tweeted Carey Cavanaugh, a former US ambassador and co-chair of the OSCE Minsk group.

Azerbaijan and Armenia have been locked in a bitter conflict over Karabakh since Armenian separatists backed by Yerevan seized control of the mountainous province in a 1990s war that left 30,000 people dead.

Karabakh's self-declared independence has not been recognised internationally, even by Armenia, and it remains a part of Azerbaijan under international law.

The current clashes broke out on September 27 and fighting has persisted despite the repeated international attempts to secure a ceasefire.

Fighting has intensified in recent days, including with renewed shelling and rocket attacks on civilian areas.

Earlier this week Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said he was not against the new round of talks in Geneva but appeared to downplay their significance.

"There have been a lot of meaningless meetings over the past 28 years," he said.

More than 1,200 people from both sides have been reported dead since the fighting began, and thousands forced from their homes.

Azerbaijan has not released military casualty figures and the death toll is believed to be higher, with Russian President Vladimir Putin saying last week close to 5,000 people had been killed.

Due to pandemic, more services offering fresh farm food to your door - Minneapolis Star Tribune

fresh.indah.link

The pandemic-driven decline in dining out has had a silver lining for home cooks: High-quality produce and meats typically destined for restaurants are increasingly finding their way to people’s kitchen tables.

The pandemic has transformed how people buy food. A surge in online grocery shopping sent grocers scrambling to satisfy customers’ expectations of convenience.

There are also more ways for shoppers to forgo the grocery store altogether and buy fresh food direct from suppliers, as business disruptions drive farms and restaurants to seek new revenue streams.

One of Chicago’s top restaurant produce distributors, Fresh Midwest, is now in the home delivery business as well, offering fresh meat and produce as well as snacks prepared in-house and meals and meal kits developed in partnership with restaurants.

Patrick Fitzgerald, who created Fresh Midwest with his twin brother, Mike, had been interested in selling direct to consumers for some time and saw an opening after grocery delivery pioneer Peapod shut down its Midwest operations in February. The onset in the U.S. of the coronavirus pandemic a month later, which caused wholesale orders to drop as restaurant clients saw business wiped out, created a “perfect storm,” he said.

Niles, Ill., company Irv and Shelly’s Fresh Picks has been delivering food from local farms to consumers since 2006, and people for years have been able to order boxes of produce through community-supported agriculture programs. But demand has boomed as people concerned about their health and immune systems seek more nutritious food.

Nichols Farm and Orchard in Marengo, Ill., a major presence at Chicago farmers markets, in March started delivering its mushrooms, carrots, jams and other products to customers’ homes.

Village Farmstand opened a storefront in suburban Evanston during the summer to help area farmers address a key challenge they encountered as they tried to sell directly to consumers: how to sort through and package their product into sizes meant for families rather than the restaurants they were accustomed to serving.

It works with nearly 60 farms and sells seasonal produce, pasture-raised meats and artisan flours online, offering pickup and, as of last week, home delivery to certain suburbs for a $10 fee. It also is working with restaurants to create frozen meals and meal kits.

“This is a new age of grocery shopping that’s way more convenient and way more flavorful,” said founder Matt Wechsler, a filmmaker who connected with the local farming community through documentaries he made about sustainability in agriculture.

Farmers who worried they would be crushed this year by the fall in restaurant orders have found a consumer audience willing to open their wallets for farm-fresh food. Village Farmstand’s prices are comparable to buying organic at Whole Foods, Wechsler said.

“Some of our farms are having their best year ever,” said Wechsler’s business partner, Marty Travis, who owns Spence Farm in Fairbury, Ill., and does the marketing and delivery for the other farms in the group.

The farms have increased production enough that if restaurants start ordering at normal levels again, Village Farmstand can continue to serve the consumer market, Travis said.

There are plans to replicate the model elsewhere, including in towns that do not have grocery stores.

Jim Slama, CEO of nonprofit FamilyFarmed, which promotes a locally grown food system, thinks the new models are here to stay.

“It’ll be a whole year of changed habits,” he said. “And people are liking it.”

Hands-on: Amazon Fresh grocery stores tease brick-and-mortar retail’s future - VentureBeat

fresh.indah.link

There were no lines outside Irvine, California’s new Amazon Fresh grocery store on its opening day last week, despite the fact that it was only the second such location in the world — and the first to be open to the public on day one. But after early visitors discovered the store’s high-tech shopping carts, two lines formed over the weekend, stretching past Amazon’s front doors to adjacent retailers in the suburban plaza. One line was longer and moving slower than the other.

“Do you want to try the Dash Cart?” an employee asked people near the end of the queue. “If not, you can move into the shorter line, and you’ll get in faster.”

We were there specifically for the Dash Cart: Friends told us that it was worth the 10- to 20-minute wait to go hands-on with one of the 25 magical shopping carts, since their integrated touchscreens and cameras were the key to Amazon’s next-generation shopping experience. The Dash Cart felt like the future of brick-and-mortar retail, they said, even though the rest of the store wasn’t that amazing.

Our friends were correct, but there’s more to the Amazon Fresh story than just Dash Carts. Here’s what it’s like to visit the supermarket of the future, today, as it’s been dreamed up and implemented by Amazon.

A boxy, spartan layout, seemingly by design

Unlike Whole Foods, the high-end supermarket chain Amazon acquired in 2017, Amazon Fresh stores look like small warehouses, and have all the charm of Walmart’s grocery sections, minus two-thirds the people and half the choices. From the signage to the aisles and specialty counters, Amazon’s latest store feels as if it was designed largely by engineers, and conceived to be as easy as possible to retrofit inside another retailer’s abandoned space — in this case, the 40,000 feet formerly occupied by a Babies R Us store.

Apart from the produce, nothing about the environment feels organic: Floors are spartan, displays are boxy, and everything looks to have been optimized for customers by computers, rather than humans. There are places to purchase whole cooked chickens for $4.97 and pizzas for $8.99, but nowhere to sit and eat them. A staffed customer service area is in the back, not the front, which instead allocates a lot of interior space to managing shopping carts.

Even the baked goods, which in other stores flow attractively off the edges of store shelves, seem to have been assigned to a specific corner of Amazon Fresh and told to stay firmly within the lines. If it wasn’t for a cadre of friendly greeters, walking through Amazon Fresh would feel more like visiting a warehouse or Costco than shopping in a typical supermarket of its size.

That feeling extends to how Amazon Fresh uses — and doesn’t use — people in its operations. Instead of having employees answer inventory-related questions, Amazon scatters Alexa terminals throughout the store, offering AI guidance on item locations, wine pairings, and measurement unit conversions. On our first visit, the Alexa terminals were both working and helpful, accurately pointing us towards items we wanted to locate. But on our second visit, all of the terminals were experiencing “connectivity issues,” perhaps the closest Amazon Fresh stores will get to a business-disrupting employee strike.

The Alexa terminals suggest that Amazon wants to staff Fresh stores as leanly as possible, even if it’s liberally using employees during the launch phase to address potential customer pain points. There were lots of Fresh staffers — too many, really — constantly restocking shelves while otherwise keeping to themselves, plus the aforementioned greeters at the front doors to help get people in and out of the store. In traditional supermarkets, all of these employees might be floaters who move from place to place as needed, alternating between helping customers and restocking shelves. But at Amazon Fresh, Alexa could help reduce the need for greeters as customers become familiar with the technology, and shelving recalibrations could reduce the need for such frequent stock replenishment.

Lower labor costs could translate directly into lower prices. And half of the new store’s appeal is reasonable pricing — that’s the single biggest problem with Whole Foods, which offers well-heeled customers an impressive selection of high-end foods and beverages that just aren’t affordable to the masses. By contrast, Amazon Fresh is clearly aimed at middle-income shoppers who still want to do some of their purchasing and browsing in person instead of on a computer screen. There are a handful of fancy items on the shelves, such as $10 pints of McConnell’s ice cream, but most of the signage is directed towards selling 15-cent bananas and 89-cent loaves of bread, rather than champagne and caviar.

Dash Cart as a solution and a problem

The more exciting part of Amazon Fresh is the Dash Cart, a shopping cart that uses sensors and smartphone technology to replace checkout lanes and standalone produce scales. As mentioned above, you don’t have to use a Dash Cart to shop at Amazon Fresh, and despite its speedy name, you’ll likely get in and out of the store faster without waiting for one. But without a Dash Cart, the shopping experience isn’t hugely different from any old small suburban supermarket you’ve previously visited.

Once you make it through the Dash Cart waiting line, you’ll get a three-minute human tutorial that explains how to link your cart to your Amazon app with a QR code, scan packaged items by dropping them into one of two included paper bags, and add produce items by inputting four-digit PLU codes into the cart’s tablet screen. These steps are supposed to eliminate the need for employees to check you out and bag your purchases; instead, the cart’s cameras and scale track everything you place in the bags, so when you leave the store, your Amazon account is automatically charged for whatever you bagged yourself. It’s an evolution of what Amazon pioneered with much smaller Amazon Go stores years ago.

Dash Carts are cool in concept, but their execution leaves a lot to be desired. On a positive note, their cameras and software did a good job with accurately scanning items we placed in the bags, and automatically removing items if we pulled them from the cart. The tablet-like touchscreen worked as expected, and though the scale inside the cart wasn’t fast, it could — with practice — be faster than walking over to a standalone produce scale and printing out a label for each item.

On the other hand, the Dash Carts had limitations that beg to be resolved in future iterations. Each cart is limited to two bags, which restricts your ability to complete a full shopping trip, and limits Amazon’s maximum take per shopper. You can’t overfill the bags, lest the cart’s cameras become incapable of seeing what’s inside. Additionally, Amazon is so concerned about theft or damage that it swaps each Dash Cart for a regular one before customers leave for the parking lot, or hands you the bags to carry to whatever distant parking space you selected. These are the sorts of practical inconveniences that could kill Dash Cart’s utility for some people.

Real-world glitches also undermined our Dash Cart experience. One of our bags ripped and needed to be replaced during the cart-to-cart transfer. We also had to go through a manual checkout line — including rescanning and rebagging every item — because our cart’s integrated code scanner couldn’t recognize an Amazon coupon. Staff said that the carts were somewhat finicky and had been experiencing hiccups like this.

Whenever one of these issues with the Dash Cart popped up, we felt as if we were holding up people who were waiting behind us, even though the issues weren’t really our fault. Other delays, such as learning how to enter PLU codes and weigh produce, caused Dash Cart users to abruptly stop mid-aisle and fidget with the tablet’s screen. We noticed some customers without the high-tech carts becoming visibly frustrated with other customers’ Dash-inspired touch interactions, but cart users seemed to be too focused on their screens to notice.

Could data make all the difference for future retailers?

It’s easy to overlook a key element of this retail experience — the intersection between Amazon.com and Amazon Fresh — because it’s so muddled at the moment. But it could wind up being a critical differentiator for Amazon’s brick-and-mortar ventures going forward.

As part of the initial onboarding experience, Amazon openly encourages Dash Cart users to digitally manage their shopping lists with the cart and browse current in-store specials using their phones. This is a mess for two reasons: The cart’s integrated shopping list management software is extremely limited, and the idea of asking users to check not just one but two touchscreens while they’re shopping is just straight-out crazy. No one wants to be stuck behind that guy who’s blocking shelves or freezers while browsing through lists and brochures. If Larry David ever visits Amazon Fresh, there’s enough material here for an entire Curb Your Enthusiasm sub-plot.

Yet there’s obvious value in tying the internet directly — and more thoughtfully — to a customer’s shopping cart. Your first visit to an Amazon Fresh store could conceivably be your last trip through its aisles: Amazon could just present you with a list of the items you purchased, offer to reorder them, and make them instantly available for either pickup or delivery. That could eliminate the need (and the premium people currently pay) for Instacart. It also could reduce the footprints of future Amazon Fresh stores by lowering the number of people who simultaneously walk through them, enabling many customers to complete transactions using the equivalent of drive-through windows.

Amazon is technically doing some if not most of these things already, but it needs to refine its smartphone and cart software to make the end-to-end experience intuitive and frictionless for customers. Somewhat ironically, the sign that it has succeeded will be if its Fresh grocery stores aren’t packed with people but are still hugely profitable, which is to say that they’ll be moving tons of products without the packed aisles and long lines normally associated with successful supermarkets.

The best of the rest of Amazon, plus coupons

One thing we loved at Amazon Fresh was an area labeled “Customer Service, Returns & Pick Up.” Normally, these things are found very close to the entrance of a supermarket, but at Amazon Fresh, they’re in the back, a decision that was likely made to get returns and pick-ups closer to the store’s storage areas and loading docks. Customers can pick up items from Amazon lockers and drop off Amazon returns — conveniences that simultaneously provide an incentive to do grocery shopping while eliminating the need to visit standalone Amazon shipping and return locations, something we can see ourselves using at least occasionally.

Amazon Fresh also includes a limited selection of the online retailer’s popular gadgets and books. We spotted the José Andrés cookbook Vegetables Unleashed and the Death & Co. cocktail guide on shelves only a short distance away from Fire tablets and Echo speakers, none of which we were looking to purchase at a supermarket — but then, we had already bought some of them online in the past. Over time, new items will replace them, and we might have reason to consider buying non-grocery goods at Amazon Fresh, as well.

At this stage, it would be hard to describe Amazon Fresh as the guaranteed future of brick-and-mortar retailing; the experience currently feels closer to a public beta test than a fully formed and polished business. Visitors can certainly have a normal or even a unique experience in the store, but they’re actually guinea pigs in a grand experiment that runs smoothly — until it doesn’t.

To Amazon’s credit, the speed bumps aren’t too daunting. Moreover, the company is actively addressing problems by handing out coupons to apologize for technical issues, and on one of our two visits, was giving away free cans of sparkling water and refrigerator magnets to everyone exiting the store. Despite the glitches, we didn’t see anyone leaving the store angry, and between the coupons and the small number of bags we left with, we were already planning our next trip to the store as we walked out to our car.

Only Amazon knows whether such a mixed but positive impression counts as “mission accomplished” or whether its early Amazon Fresh grocery customers are just helping it refine a larger campaign to completely dominate the retail world. Thanks to Amazon’s growing scale and unquestionable ambition, the Fresh grocery stores could either become very real challengers to traditional supermarkets — or fizzle out as experiments that made little difference to the company’s bottom line.

If you’re interested in seeing Amazon Fresh for yourself, you can visit the new store at 13672 Jamboree Road in Irvine, or the first location — open to the public since September — at 6245 Topanga Canyon Boulevard in Woodland Hills, California. Both stores are open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.

Fresh off suspension, AJ Hinch takes over as Tigers manager - The Denver Post

fresh.indah.link

DETROIT — As he waited out his suspension this year, AJ Hinch knew he wanted to return to baseball. The question was whether anyone in the sport would be ready to welcome him.

His answer came pretty quickly.

“About 30 minutes after the World Series’ last out, my phone rang,” Hinch said.

It was Detroit general manager Al Avila, telling Hinch to get on a plane. The Tigers quickly hired Hinch as their new manager, giving him a chance to return to a major league dugout after he was fired by Houston in the wake of the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal.

It may take a while for Hinch to overcome the stigma of what happened in Houston, but he and his new bosses were ready to address the topic Friday.

“I understand the question and I understand how wrong it was, and I’m sorry for that,” Hinch said. “I’ve said that before, I’ll say it again, I’ll continue to say it. I’ll never forget the feeling that I’ve had throughout the past year as I’ve navigated this with my family, but you quickly get to the exciting time of getting back and leading a group of men again, and establishing what Tigers baseball’s going to be all about.

“I’m sorry that today, that has to be a topic, and I understand why.”

The 46-year-old Hinch replaces Ron Gardenhire, who retired late this season. He takes over a team that has been rebuilding for the past few years.

Hinch guided Houston to the 2017 World Series title, but that championship — and a lot of what he accomplished there — is now viewed in a different light after an investigation found the Astros used a video feed from a center field camera to decode the opposing catcher’s signs, and players banged on a trash can to signal to hitters what was coming. In January, Major League Baseball suspended Hinch and Astros GM Jeff Luhnow for the season and the Astros immediately fired both.

Hinch said then that he hadn’t endorsed the sign stealing but had failed to stop it.

“I started thinking right then and there, when AJ and Jeff got suspended, what’s going to happen to those two guys? Are those two guys going to be back in the sport? Would they be welcomed back in the sport?” said Christopher Ilitch, the Tigers’ chairman and CEO. “As time went on, and I just sort of watched from afar, how everybody that was involved with that handled themself, I really admired the way AJ handled himself.”

Hinch said he was very happy when the season was able to start, and he also went on a couple family trips. He also said he contracted the coronavirus, which made for some scary times in September.

He knew, however, that he didn’t want to be away from the game for long.

“I always knew that I wanted to get back into baseball,” he said. “It was a matter of, I think the game and the people within the game will tell you where that’s going to be, if it’s going to be anywhere.”

Hinch said he was counting down the outs to the end of the postseason, when he could start having serious interviews with any interested teams. On Thursday, the Chicago White Sox announced the hiring of Hall of Famer Tony La Russa for that managerial opening. Hinch said he never interviewed for that position.

On Friday, the Tigers announced a multiyear deal with Hinch. He had a connection with the organization, having played for Detroit in 2003.

“We had a pretty good knowledge of AJ, of who he was,” Avila said. “There was never a doubt in my mind of his character, honesty — he’s one of the better guys that you’re going to meet in the game, or in life in general. One mistake does not determine a man.”

Detroit went 23-35 in this shortened season, finishing last in the AL Central. That’s been a familiar spot for the Tigers recently — Detroit lost 114 games in 2019 — but the team has been able to pick high in the draft during this stretch. Casey Mize, the top overall pick in 2018, reached the majors this year, and Detroit used this year’s No. 1 selection on infielder Spencer Torkelson.

Left-hander Tarik Skubal made his big league debut this season along with Mize. While these youngsters have yet to prove they can make the Tigers contenders again, Detroit will hope Hinch can replicate what he did in Houston.

Hinch, a former big league catcher, managed Arizona from May 2009 until July 2010. When he took over the Astros before the 2015 season, they had not finished above .500 since 2008. Houston then had a winning record in all five years under Hinch, including that 2017 World Series title and the 2019 American League pennant.

Hinch is 570-452 as a major league manager. He played from 1998-2004, spending time with Oakland, Kansas City, Detroit and Philadelphia.

Gardening: Still eating vegetables fresh from the garden - The Providence Journal

fresh.indah.link
By Henry Homeyer  |  Special to The Journal

Granted, I have a vegetable garden mainly so I can have fresh, succulent tomatoes from July until some time in October. But I also have grown, I think, all vegetables that will grow in our climate. Right now, my saved tomatoes are all eaten, but I am enjoying plenty of other fresh veggies, and I am storing others for eating later.

For late fall, nothing beats Brussels sprouts. The trick to having good Brussels sprouts is to cut off the top of the plant in early September. I say do it on Labor Day, but even a bit later is fine. If you fail to do that, the plants will use all their energy to grow taller and taller. If you cut 3 inches off the top and it stops growing taller, it sends its energy to bulking up those cute little green “cabbages” that pop out of the stalk. Some years I’ve continued picking until late December, despite snow and cold.

Now I realize that for many people, a serving of Brussels sprouts is as appetizing as dead skunk left on the side of the road for a couple of days before serving. Those are people who probably were served overcooked sprouts in public schools. Mushy, grayish-green sprouts are not appetizing.

If you cook your sprouts “al dente,” you may change your opinion. Steam them until just tender enough to spear with a fork, or cut them in half and sauté in butter or olive oil and walnuts, and you may change your mind. I happen to like steaming them, then sprinkling Marukan brand seasoned gourmet rice wine vinegar over mine – tasty, and without the calories of butter preferred by many.

Kale gets tastier as the season goes on. A few hard frosts sweetens it up. If the deer don’t get it after snowfall, I often have it until Christmas. I like it in a breakfast smoothie: in a blender I put 2 leaves of kale with midribs removed, a banana, a cup of orange juice and a cup of water, some fresh ginger (to taste), the juice of half a lime, and some frozen blueberries or raspberries from the garden or stored in the freezer.

Kale can also be used for salad. Our friend Eliza Bergeson makes a great kale salad: she removes the midrib and chops the kale. She then massages it for about 5 minutes with a dressing of olive oil and lemon. She adds honey mustard, salt and pepper. The massaging makes the kale tender and works in the dressing. She adds feta cheese crumbs, dried cranberries, walnuts and fresh red peppers for color.

My broccoli continues to produce side shoots, despite the frosts. If you keep on cutting them off, they keep on flowering. Some years I grow non-heading broccoli relatives. One is called piricicaba, the other "Happy Rich." Neither produces a big head, but both produce lots of little florets and persist well into the fall. I get seeds from Johnny’s or Fedco and start them in April, as these are not readily available as starts in most garden centers.

I just harvested a 5-gallon pail of celery root or — as it is often called — celeriac. This is a celery relative that is grown for its roots, not stems. The leaves look and smell the same, but celeriac does not produce edible stalks. I clean and chop celeriac roots to use in soups and stews. It has a nice celery flavor.

I start celeriac in March by seed indoors. It is a slow grower at first, but once in the ground it takes off if in moist soil and full sunshine. Spacing is important, too. Crowd celeriac and you’ll get little. This summer I spaced them 6 inches apart in 3 rows 8 inches apart in one wide bed, and they did well. I watered in dry times.

I also just harvested a 5-gallon pail of leeks. Leeks are great, in my book, because you can use them in lieu of onions when cooking, and unlike onions, you can freeze them.

Leek and potato soup is one of my fall favorites. I just made some. Here is what I did: I started by dicing and frying 2 or 3 strips of thick cut bacon in a large cast iron, enameled pot. Of course, vegetarians can substitute butter instead. Then I added some olive oil and 4 cups of potatoes, cut into half-inch cubes. I browned the potatoes a little, then added 4 cups of leeks. Since I am rich in celeriac, I chopped up a whole one and added it to the mix.

I then added 8 cups of water, and simmered slowly. I added 1½ teaspoons of a dried herb called "Herbes de Provence." That is a mix of various Mediterranean spices (savory, marjoram, rosemary, thyme, oregano and lavender). I added a couple of tablespoons of vegetarian vegetable broth powder (Seitenbacher brand) to give some added flavor. I then added a handful of fresh chopped parsley.

I cooked the soup until the potatoes were done. I used a red-skinned potato that I grew this year, one called "Fenway Red." It is a productive potato, and holds together well in a soup. Just don’t overcook it. I like a milky leek and potato soup, but don’t like to cook the milk, so I just added a quarter cup to each bowl at serving time. Yum!

As with any soup, I vary my leek and potato recipe whenever I make it. Sometimes I add dried cherry tomatoes, or peas. Kale would be good – it goes well with potatoes at my St. Patrick’s Day meal, colcannon. That’s the great thing about fresh vegetables. You can’t go wrong.

So when you plan your garden for next year, be sure to grow some veggies that survive frost and are tasty on a cold fall night.

JUST IN: Rate of New Local Coronavirus Cases Reaches Fresh Five-Month High - ARLnow

fresh.indah.link

The average rate of new coronavirus cases in Arlington is the highest it’s been in nearly five months.

Overnight 39 new cases were reported in the county, bringing the seven-day trailing total to 198. The last time the number was that high was June 2, as the county’s spring epidemic was petering out. The seven-day peak was 316 cases on May 3.

The cumulative total of cases in the county now stands at 4,686, according to the Virginia Dept. of Health.

Arlington’s test positivity rate is now 3.8%, up from 3.2% on Oct. 1, despite the number of PCR-based testing encounters increasing over the month of October. There were an average of 482 daily testing encounters on Oct. 1, compared to about 550 now.

Hospitalizations and deaths have continued to stay relatively low in Arlington. Four COVID-related deaths have been reported in October, compared to 10 in September. The current seven-day total of new reported hospitalizations stands at 10, down from 16 two days ago.

The rate of new cases statewide, meanwhile, has been increasing. The current seven-day trailing average of new daily cases in Virginia is 1,194, just four shy from the previous peak in August and one shy from the spring peak in May.

Northern Virginia topped 300 new COVID cases for the third straight day yesterday, while the U.S. recorded more than 90,000 cases, a single-day record for the country.

According to the Washington Post’s pandemic tracker, new cases, hospitalizations and deaths nationwide have risen 21.3%, 12.8% and 2.2%, respectively, over the past week.

Health experts say they’re concerned about the pandemic getting worse as the weather gets colder, perhaps mirroring the increasingly dire situation in Europe.

World stocks take fresh dip as COVID infection rate weighs - Reuters

fresh.indah.link

LONDON (Reuters) - World stocks fell further and oil headed for a double-digit weekly slide on Friday as jitters over a rising global COVID-19 infection rate and next week’s U.S. presidential election more than offset strong euro zone quarterly growth data.

FILE PHOTO: Men wearing protective face masks chat in front of a screen displaying Nikkei share average and world stock indexes outside a brokerage, in Tokyo, Japan October 5, 2020. REUTERS/Issei Kato

A strong central bank-fuelled bounce back from the initial pandemic slide earlier in the year has faltered this week, with concerns about an even worse second wave of infections, particularly in Europe, taking the froth off markets.

“The US election, the extent of further lockdown measures, Brexit negotiations and vaccine news all present both upside and downside risks over the coming weeks and it is understandable that investors may want to proceed with caution,” said Mark Dowding, chief investment officer at BlueBay Asset Management.

World stocks .MIWD00000PUS were down 0.2% at 1103 GMT, tracking weakness in Asia, while U.S. stock futures ESc1NQc1 were down 0.8% to 1%, pointing to a lower open on Wall Street. Gold rose, with spot prices climbing 0.6% to $1,878 an ounce.

In Europe, the blue-chip EuroSTOXX 50 .STOXX50E recovered early losses to trade flat after strong regional growth numbers, but is on track for a weekly loss of 6.7% and remains around levels last seen in late May.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside of Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS closed down 1.2% for a 2.2% weekly loss, breaking four straight weeks of gains.

“New lockdowns across Europe are being harshly repriced by markets,” Barclays equity strategist Emmanuel Cau said in a note to clients.

“With complacency going fast, this dip could end up offering another good entry point, but a lot depends on the election outcome and timing of the results.”

European government bond yields rose slightly in response to fresh COVID restrictions across the continent, with Italian, Spanish and German 10-year debt yields all up around 1 basis point.

Brent crude LCOc1 gave up intra-morning gains to trade down 0.2%, broadly in line with its U.S. peer CLc1, facing weekly losses of around 10%.

That in turn led to a broad sell-off of commodity linked currencies including the Russian rouble RUBUTSTN=MCX, Norwegian crown NOK= and Canadian dollar CAD=, which was facing its worst week since April.

The slight recovery in European stock markets followed a strong euro zone quarterly GDP print - up 12.7% -, one day after the European Central Bank pledged more help for the economy when it next meets in December to help counter the potential economic hit from the pandemic.

Societe Generale FX analyst Kit Juckes said that given the recent imposition of a fresh lock-down in France, the positive growth data there - an 18.2% quarter-on-quarter jump - was not enough to outweigh the virus concerns.

This week has seen global coronavirus cases rise by over 500,000 for the first time, with France and Germany preparing fresh lockdowns.

In response, analysts expect an expansion and extension of the ECB’s Pandemic Emergency Purchase Programme, a lower deposit facility rate, and even more generous lending terms for banks in December.

This saw the euro EUR= slide to a four-week low of $0.1648 before recovering slightly on Friday to trade at $1.1672, down around 0.4% since the start of the month.

The dollar index =USD, meanwhile, held steady, bolstered by a solid session on Wall Street overnight after some strong tech sector earnings and data showing the U.S. economy grew at a record annualised pace of 33.1% in the third quarter.

Brazil’s Bolsonaro says fresh COVID-19 lockdowns ‘crazy’ - Al Jazeera English

fresh.indah.link

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, a longtime critic of stay-at-home measures to combat the coronavirus pandemic, has said that it was “crazy” for countries to start locking down again to control second waves of the virus.

Bolsonaro made the statement on Thursday, as he also declared that he will not pay for the Chinese coronavirus vaccine that is under clinical trial in the city of Sao Paulo state.

“Dear Sao Paulo Governor (Joao Doria), I know you’re passionate. You know this but no one is going to take a forced vaccine, it would be difficult,” the president said in a rambling statement.

“Find another. I am the government, the money is not mine but the people’s. I am not going to buy your vaccine also. Find another to buy your vaccine.”

Most Western countries and parts of Latin America have reported their highest single-day surges in the past few weeks.

Many governments, with the notable exception of the United States, have started taking stronger measures to bring the latest outbreaks under control.

Since the pandemic began, Bolsonaro’s coronavirus policy has echoed that of US President Donald Trump expressing resistance to lockdowns because of their effect on the economy.

‘No to Chinese vaccine’

Last week, Brazil’s right-wing president also appeared to reject a decision by his own health minister to buy 46 million doses of a vaccine from China’s Sinovac Biotech saying: “We will not buy a Chinese vaccine.”

Brazil has the second-deadliest outbreak of the coronavirus, after the US and has reported more than 159,000 deaths.

It also has the third-highest number of infections at 5.5 million next to the US and India.

Meanwhile, Brazil’s health regulator, Antonio Barra Torres, said he expects the country to have a vaccine against COVID-19 approved and ready for use in a national inoculation programme by June 2021.

Torres told the Reuters news agency on Thursday that his regulatory agency, also known as Anvisa, has not decided on the minimum efficacy but said the agency had approved vaccines in the past with less than 50 percent effectiveness.

Health authorities in Europe are debating whether to accept a so-called efficacy rate of less than 50 percent to be able to deliver a vaccine sooner, the Wall Street Journal newspaper reported this week.

Sandra Gallina, director-general for Health and Food Safety at the European Commission told EU legislators in a hearing that the article was speculative, but then added that it was not rare to have vaccines that work with only 50 percent efficacy.

Torres said Brazil could register more than one of the four candidates now being tested in the country – from Oxford University/AstraZeneca, China’s Sinovac Biotech, Pfizer in partnership with BioNTech and Johnson & Johnson’s pharmaceutical subsidiary Janssen – irrespective of their country of origin.

“The origin of the vaccine has no bearing for us, there is no prejudice,” he said.

Two days after Bolsonaro’s comments, Anvisa authorised Sao Paulo’s Butantan Institute to import six million doses of CoronaVac and on Wednesday further authorised the biomedical centre to import the raw ingredients to make a further 40 million doses in Brazil.

Russia has agreed to supply its Sputnik V vaccine to the Brazilian states of Parana and Bahia, but it must first be tested and approved by Anvisa. Torres said that, to date, the agency had received no data or request for approval of Sputnik V trial protocols.

Torres said the Butantan Institute and the federal FioCruz biomedical centre in Rio de Janeiro have the capacity to produce millions of doses of vaccines for Brazil and probably for other Latin American nations.

Anvisa is in talks with some countries in the region about them accepting its registration of vaccines manufactured in Brazil, he said.

'A fresh new perspective’: Republican Daniel Gade hopes to secure a spot in Senate - WSLS 10

fresh.indah.link

ROANOKE, Va. – Virginia voters haven’t elected a Republican to statewide office in more than a decade, but Daniel Gade is hoping to change that.

“A fresh new perspective. A servant’s heart. a lifetime of demonstrated fidelity to the Constitution and willingness to risk everything including my life for my values, for our shared values,” said Gade.

The 25-year Army veteran lost a leg in Iraq and was decorated for valor. Since then, he’s worked on veterans issues and military healthcare on the national level.

“This is it just an extension of what I’ve always done, just serve my fellow citizens and serve the constitution,” said Gade.

In an uphill battle against a two-term incumbent, health care has become a focal point. Many Republicans are pushing to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, but Gade calls that “nonsense.”

“Any reform that I would ever back would protect people with pre-existing conditions, and work to bend the cost curve down," said Gade. “I’m not a regular politician. I’m not a career politician. What I am is a career servant and yeah it might be risky in a political sense, but what’s more risky is just kicking the can down the road.”

When it comes to COVID-19, Gade has criticized opponent Mark Warner’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and says Virginians need another round of relief.

“People are suffering right now, they need the paycheck protection plan, they need the search for a vaccine, they need the extra money for schools,” Gade said.

When questioned about his thoughts on racial injustice, Gade said he wants to see change too, but said the defunding of police is “absurd and evil.”

“But I feel the need for racial justice as well which is why I am for sentencing reform. I’m for drug reform, even descheduling marijuana,” he said.

Gade said he hopes that having somebody you can trust will land him a spot in the Senate.

Fresh Produce And Floral Post September Gains - Southeast Produce Weekly

fresh.indah.link

Industry analyst and consultant Anne-Marie Roerink is president of 210 Analytics and an expert on marketing produce from farm to retail. Her travels take her to stores around the world. On a recurring basis in SPW, Anne-Marie shares retail insights and marketing success stories that are Ideas Ripe For The Picking.

Anne-Marie Roerink

The pandemic caused changes in virtually all shopping habits, from when and where people shopped to the types, amounts and brands they purchased. These changes were driven by anxiety over in-store visits that prompted fewer and shorter trips as well as by out-of-stocks, more meals at home and greater interest in food experimentation. Seven months since the onset of COVID-19, many of the pandemic shopping habits are trending back toward normal.

According to IRI’s latest survey wave of primary shoppers in late September, anxiety levels over in-store visits have decreased significantly, with 58% of shoppers feeling relaxed. This is an improvement of 15 percentage points since July. This begs the question whether people have similar increased confidence in restaurant visits, which could result in more of the food dollar going to foodservice.

Additionally, two-thirds of shoppers now spend about the same amount of time shopping in the store as they did before the pandemic. Browsing for different items to try is also up a few points. These are all encouraging signs for new product launches and in-store merchandising once more catching the attention of shoppers.

While shopping patterns are normalizing, food spending at retail remains highly elevated across most departments. The month started off with strong Labor Day sales during the week of Sept. 6. Everyday demand kept produce dollars well above 2019 levels across all temperature zones during the subsequent September weeks. Frozen fruit and vegetable sales are the smallest, but did see above-average gains.

“Retail demand continued to be very strong throughout September, similar to the levels seen throughout July and August,” Produce Marketing Association Vice President of Membership and Engagement Joe Watson said. “While shopping habits are trending back toward normal, at-home consumption remains elevated across meal occasions. We need to continue to support shoppers in their meal planning and preparation. Our best pandemic sales driver has been trip conversion and our biggest win in the next few months is selling fresh produce every trip, online and offline.”

Fresh produce generated $5.04 billion in sales during the four September weeks — an additional $489 million in sales versus the same time period in 2019. This encompasses an additional $171 million in additional fruit sales and $313 million in additional vegetable sales. Vegetable sales have outpaced fruit sales throughout the pandemic and have generated 28 weeks of double-digit growth since the onset of the pandemic shopping patterns in mid-March.

Fresh Share

Fresh produce commanded an 80.3% share of total fruit and vegetable sales across all three temperature zones during the four September weeks — down a percentage point from its August average of 81.3%. It is also the lowest share since April.

“It is important to point out that inflationary levels in frozen and canned goods have been higher than those in fresh produce, which impacts dollar shares,” said Jonna Parker, Team Lead for Fresh at IRI. “However, the pandemic has definitely fueled a consumer desire for items with longer shelf-life, whether that is hardier fresh fruits and vegetables or diverting dollars to canned and frozen.”

Fresh Produce Dollars Versus Volume

Labor Day week saw volume sales exceeding dollar sales for the first time in months due to a very strong performance on the fruit side. Volume growth continued to slightly outpace dollar gains the remainder of the month.

“Retailers are very cognizant of the new economic reality, which could mean some are investing in price,” Watson said. “Fresh produce promotions have always been an important trip and store driver and even more so during difficult economic times.”

The strong produce volume performance was driven by fruit, that saw a 12.6% increase in September versus the same month year ago — up from +3.7% the month prior. Vegetables had strong volume gains as well, but they tracked four points below dollar gains.

Absolute Dollar Gains

“The strength of vegetables amid the pandemic is clearly demonstrated by the top 10 in absolute dollar gains,” Watson said. “While berries and melons had very strong September performance as the numbers one and three in absolute dollar gains versus year ago, the remaining eight top 10 contenders were all vegetables.”

Fresh Fruit

“In fruit, berries remained dominant in sales but grapes and apples came on strong in September,” Parker said. “Melons had a monster Labor Day week and continued to do well throughout September. Others that performed very well during the four September weeks were oranges and lemons, whereas avocados continued to be plagued by double-digit deflation.”

Fresh Vegetables

The top 10 in sales on the vegetable side included seven items that had double-digit increases versus year ago.

“Lettuce is the dominant player on the vegetable side, driven by bagged lettuce,” Watson said. “Other meal basics including tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, etc. all continued to track well ahead of 2019 levels, which underscores that consumers are still cooking more meals at home.”

More than 78% of September lettuce sales was made up by fresh-cut (packaged) salad. Dollar gains for fresh cut salad have been very constant at around 10% above year ago levels and September was no different. Volume sales increased 9.3% and units grew 7% during September versus year ago levels.

Fresh Versus Frozen And Shelf-Stable Fruits And Vegetables

September brought gains for fruit and vegetables across all temperature zones. The highest percentage gains were reserved for frozen fruit. However, this is also the smallest of sales areas. In both fresh and shelf-stable, vegetables continued to outperform fruit.

Floral

Floral struggled early on in the pandemic as retailers focused on keeping the produce department stocked, but has been trending well above year ago levels ever since May. After two months of near identical gains, floral sales gains actually exceeded fresh produce growth by about one percentage point in September.

Perimeter Performance

A strong Labor Day performance started off September with a big boost for all fresh departments. The remainder of the month was driven by everyday demand, which continued to be far above last year’s levels.

Center-store gains outperformed those of total store and fresh and the meat department continued to be the strongest of the perimeter departments. Total deli, which encompasses non-UPC, random-weight deli cheese, meat and prepared foods, remained pressured, due to deli-prepared sales’ continued struggles. September was, however, its best pandemic performance to date.

What’s Next?

Everyday fresh produce demand continues to hold around 10% above year ago levels as new COVID-19 case counts continue to rise and fall in different regions of the country. While everyday demand seems to have set into a new and elevated pattern, the holiday demand is expected to be vastly different.

According to the latest IRI primary shopper survey wave from late September, only 29% of consumers expect to host or attend a meal with extended family who do not live with them for Thanksgiving. This is down from 48% last year. Friendsgiving and traveling out of state are also more unlikely this year, as Americans are most likely to stay home and celebrate with immediate family, according to 34% of respondents. This will have a profound impact on grocery spending.

Early indications for December holiday celebrations and grocery spending suggest a similar impact as Thanksgiving, and even more are planning to cut back on groceries to save money as many are expecting higher food prices come November and December compared with the 2019 holiday season. Shoppers plan to spend less on groceries, gifts, and decorations across grocery, mass, club, dollar and especially drugstores and local small businesses. Online-only retailers are currently estimated to net a slight gain.

These predictions point to many potential changes for the grocery world. Much like the pandemic-affected holidays to date, it is likely that the winter holidays will see small gatherings, which will affect grocery choices. Additionally, less holiday travel will likely express itself in continued retail versus foodservice spending for those at home versus on the road.

The next report, covering October, will be released in mid November. Contact PMA VP of Membership and Engagement Joe Watson at jwatson@pma.com with any questions.
