Give yourself, home a fresh start for 2021 - The Virginian-Pilot - Virginian-Pilot

fresh.indah.link

The key is to start early, start small and start with the easy. Of course, that’s not always an option with an unexpected move. However, when time allows, it makes for a much less stressful process. For instance, like with losing weight, you lose those first five pounds, you’re feeling good and inspired to keep going.

It's been a long holiday season of boozy hot chocolate, gingerbread cookies and thick slices of ham, and maybe you're feeling like it's time for a fresh start. Ever heard of Vegan January? (We tried it last year, if you're curious about what it's like.) Well, you don't have to commit to a whole month of eating a plant-based diet, but if you're interested in seeing what meatless and dairy-free options the Bay Area has to offer, we've got a few ideas. And bonus: A lot of it resembles your favorite junk food.

These are the best new vegan restaurants in San Francisco, Oakland and beyond to check out this January.

Father-and-son duo Keguang Zhao and Dan Zhao opened this Chinese vegan and vegetarian restaurant in East Oakland in October. It's a "ghost kitchen" based at Jingletown Eats, meaning it's takeout-only. Not everything on the menu is vegan, but quite a bit is, from the orange peel “chicken” to the mapo tofu with Beyond Meat.

Cozy Wok, 2353 E 12th St., Oakland. Open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. every day except Tuesday.

Working Strategies: Starting fresh in 2021 – a look at relocation - TwinCities.com-Pioneer Press

fresh.indah.link

If ever there was a year in which we wanted — no, needed — to start fresh, this is it. For the month of January, I’ll review five classic ways to refresh your work life: relocating, returning to work after a long unemployment, upgrading your education, changing careers, and starting a business.

Amy Lindgren

Let’s jump in with relocation. While January might not be ideal for packing a moving truck, it can be perfect for exploring the possibility of living elsewhere. With the holidays behind us and the long winter nights ahead, there should be plenty of time to research new locales.

For workers too young to retire, relocation decisions have traditionally hinged on employment options. If at least one household member couldn’t be assured of finding work in the new location, moving could be risky. Families with children carried the additional burden of finding a school district to fit their kids’ needs.

A lot has changed in the months since pandemic protocols sent so many people home. Knowledge workers and office professionals discovered they can earn a paycheck from their living rooms, while some parents are finding value in remote learning options for their children.

We won’t have solid numbers for awhile yet, but early statistics indicate relocation is on the rise, with some of the most dramatic stories coming from families leaving dense urban areas for more expansive homes in the suburbs or small towns. With some remote areas improving broadband access, the possibility of working and learning from nearly anywhere is becoming a reality faster than we could have predicted just one year ago.

For those whose work can’t be conducted remotely, relocation is still a strong option, based in part on labor shortages in numerous vocations throughout the country. In some cases, retraining is being offered by short-handed organizations searching for new workers.

Regardless of your occupation, relocation is never a simple decision. Any number of things need to be considered, and multiple hurdles must be overcome before that moving truck can pull out for your new destination.

If you embark on this process, let one thought guide you: This will be an improvement. Because if it’s not, why do it? However you measure improvement — better work, safer community, lower costs, closer proximity to family — keeping those rewards in mind will give you the boost you need to make it happen.

Here are some steps to get you started on a relocation plan.

1. Let your motivation help choose your location. If you’re leaving something more than going to something — that is, if you want out of your current location more than you want in somewhere else — focus on what you want to leave behind, be that weather, crime, or a high cost of living.

On the other hand, if you’re eagerly anticipating something specific, such as a home in the country, or a place near your family, these criteria may determine your new location for you.

2. Narrow your relocation options. What if you can’t decide where to move? Well, you have to or you won’t be going anywhere. If that sounds harsh, ask yourself: How long have you been thinking about doing this? Right. Some people spend a lifetime thinking about relocating but never actually do it.

To break this logjam, choose three locations based on just about anything that matters to you and then research to let you pick the best one of the three. Do this twice more, so that you have a total of three top options out of nine that you’ve explored. If you still can’t decide, put the top three in a hat and pick one. Crazy? No, because you’ve done your research. At this stage, you need to trust your process so that you can move forward.

3. Set a timeline. In addition to your research process, other items for your timeline would include a physical visit when that’s possible, a review of work and school options (either remote or physically located in the new area), and a strategy for housing. Remember to include a goal date for the move itself, to help keep the project on track.

4. Get started. If you find yourself stuck at any point, find a partner or adviser to help you. Remember that you don’t have to follow through on an actual move, as long as you complete enough steps to let you know if it isn’t the right idea for the moment. But if you don’t do at least that much, you’ll always wonder what could have been — and you may be missing out on a fresh start.

Minnesotans Weigh In On 2021: Fresh Start? Or Same Old, Same Old? - CBS Minnesota

fresh.indah.link

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — It’s safe to say many were happy to see 2020 come to a close, but the reality is: Things don’t change overnight.

Friends Jeff Spohn and Cesar Vasquez spent their first day of 2021 going for a walk in Loring Park. They say it’s too early to truly celebrate 2021 as a “fresh start.”

“Rainbows are a little hard to find out there right now,” said Spohn. “The COVID thing is going to be overhanging everything.”

“I hope the businesses open soon because we need to work,” said Vasquez.

While the two are being realistic about the state of our world, still, they are patiently holding onto hope.

“[I’m] waiting for good things, and I know good things are coming,” said Vasquez.

Out in Excelsior, 200 Minnesotans found their fresh start to 2021 by jumping into a freezing Lake Minnetonka.

“When we jump in that water, you wash away all that was last year, you get a whole new start,” Brian Sobocinski, of St. Paul, said.

Whether an ice dive was a resolution or just something fun to do for charity, it set up a motto for David Begg’s year.

“When we do this, the next thing you know – if I can do this? I can do anything,” said Begg.

The year 2020 ended strong for newlyweds, Lief and Karolina Kjorness, and they’re carrying that energy into the new year.

“You have to wake up and embrace the day the universe is giving you a second chance at life. Every day is a new day,” said Kjorness.

This was the 31st year of that ice dive in Excelsior. They raised around $9,000 for Excelsior fire and police departments, as well as the Wounded Warrior Project.

Jazz Start 2021 Fresh With Win Over Clippers - KSL Sports

fresh.indah.link

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Utah Jazz won their first home game of the season, kicking off 2021 with a bang after beating the Los Angeles Clippers 106-100 at Vivint Arena.

Though the Jazz got the win, it was far from perfect. The team built leads of 18 and 20 points in the first and second halves, only to have the Clippers trim the margins to one point on both occasions.

However, the Jazz answered the Clippers runs throughout the evening to earn a crucial victory before heading out on a seven-game road trip across the East coast.

Conley’s Excellence Continues

Mike Conley’s excellence has continued from his play in the Orlando bubble last season through the first five games this year. Conley is the Jazz leading scorer this season averaging 21.4 points per game.

Conley had a game-high 33 points against the Clippers including seven made threes to seal the Jazz victory. The guard’s play has been paramount so far with Donovan Mitchell struggling to shoot the ball from the field and Bojan Bogdanovic’s shot coming and going by the quarter.

The game marked Conley’s first 30 point game in a Jazz uniform, and his first since his final game for the Memphis Grizzlies on March 30, 2019, when he also scored 33 points.

“I’m just happy to be able to see this thing grow, myself included,” Conley said. “Because last year was a tough year. Just went through a lot, personally, on and off the court. It was a tough year.”

The veteran guard has now scored 20 points or more in 10 of the Jazz last 16 games going back to the Orlando bubble.

Ingles And Favors Excellent Play

The Jazz got the play from Derrick Favors and Joe Ingles off the bench that they expected after signing the familiar face in the offseason. The former Jazzman had a 14 point, 11 rebound double-double in 23 minutes of play.

Ingles had 11 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists in 32 minutes.

“Joe’s performance was just terrific,” Snyder said after the game. “And [Favors] came in with Rudy in foul trouble and gave us really good minutes.”

Though the pick and roll with Ingles was key to his offensive efficiency, it was Favors defense that made the biggest impact in the game.

The Clippers tried to attack the paint against the Jazz and Favors didn’t allow them to have any more success than they would have had Rudy Gobert been on the floor.

In addition to his double-double, Favors was frequently able to get his hands on loose balls and offensive rebounds.

Giving Favors the full Mid Level Exception was risky, especially considering the league’s move away from big rotations. But if Favors can continue to give the Jazz a similar level of play, he’ll be worth the money this season.

“I’m gonna play hard regardless,” Favors said. “I’m gonna attack the boards regardless on the defensive and then on the offensive [glass].”

Things That Don’t Fit The 2020 Theme

Yesterday the Jazz lost in unsurprising 2020 fashion. Just like the year itself, everything that could go wrong did and the Jazz lost 106-95. We made a list of moments within the Jazz loss that reflected 2020 itself.

Now entering 2021, all humankind can hope that the Jazz performance against the Clippers is an omen for how the next 364 days will go.

Bojan Bogdanovic made his first basket after finishing 0-5 against the Suns. He still finished just 3-12, but his aggressiveness to open the game helped the Jazz offense.

Donovan Mitchell also made his first three-point shot against the Clippers after four consecutive shooting outings. Mitchell finished with 15 points on 6-14 shooting.

Royce O’Neale ran the floor which set up a wide-open three off the baseball assist from Mitchell. The Jazz didn’t run the floor against Phoenix and it prevented them from getting easy looks from deep.

The Jazz hit 15 threes on 42 attempts.

Paul George shot just 6-22 from the floor. Five of his makes were from three, but despite 25 points, he was a -12 for the night.

Though they allowed an 18 point lead to dissolving to just one, they finished the half on an 8-0 run to lead by nine at the half. It was the first half time lead for the Jazz since opening night.

The Jazz had a 17-0 run.

Ingles and Conley had a good night together for what feels like may the first time since Conley joined the team.

Mitchell’s leaping ability appeared to be back as he threw down a big dunk after breaking the paint.

Though the Clippers erased two huge leads by the Jazz, they continued to compete throughout the game and never gave in to the momentum getting away from them.

The Jazz won their first home game of the season.

The team now embarks on a seven-game road trip with stops in San Antonio, Brooklyn, New York, Milwaukee, Detroit, Cleveland, and Washington.

Cats Looking for Fresh Start as SEC Play Begins - UKAthletics

fresh.indah.link
With the beginning of a new year and the onset of conference play, the time is right for a new start for the Kentucky basketball team. The Cats discussed that on Thursday as they previewed Saturday's SEC opener at Mississippi State (Sat., Jan. 2, 6 p.m. ET, SEC Network).

Assistant coach Joel Justus addressed the media and said that the coaching staff and the players are focused on a few items.

"We have daily conversations with all of our players," Justus said. "And I think that's a big thing that (UK head coach John Calipari) is on right now, our entire staff is on right now, is we're looking to build each one of our guys. That's important. Early in the season, whether you're undefeated or you're in a situation like we are right now, we're looking to build up each one of our guys every single day, every single rep."

How do the Cats go about doing that?

"You do that by executing," Justus said. "You do that by working on your motor, by working hard, by cutting hard, by passing the ball to your teammates the right way. And that's something that we're looking to give them that confidence."

Justus said that this is nothing new for a John Calipari-coached team.

"That's what he does this time of year," Justus said. "You're trying to build these guys up. You have to give them the mental picture."

That mental picture should give each of the Cats a better idea of what's expected of them as well as what the results will bring.

"I think our job is to provide a clear picture of what we want on the offensive end," Justus said. "We want to build each one of these guys up to have the confidence on the offensive end, to know where they're supposed to be, to have not only the mental picture of what they can do on the offensive end, but also have the confidence that they can go out and execute."

The Cats are focusing on the now with a brief look into the future.

"We are worried about ourselves. We are worried about getting better. We're worried about execution," Justus said. "We're worried about building each one of these guys mental picture of who they are and who we can become and that's a team that's going to play hard, that's a team that's going to compete on the defensive end and a team that's going to execute on the offensive end. When you do those things, you're going to give yourself a chance to win."

Mississippi State is 6-3 and 1-0 in the SEC after winning at Georgia on Wednesday night. While the Cats will pay plenty of attention to the Bulldogs, the Cats have more of an inner focus.

"I think for us we take it day by day right now," Justus said. "We're focused on ourselves."

Freshman forward Isaiah Jackson thinks now is a good time for the team to reset and re-focus on what they need to do.

"I mean, league starts Saturday, so I feel like that's a fresh start for us," Jackson said. "These are the games that truly honestly count, in my opinion, to build on to when we get into March Madness, winning the league and things like that."

The Cats are hoping that the start of a new year, as well as the beginning of conference play, can bring about positive changes as the season moves forward.

Calipari Set to Coach in 1,000th Career Game

Saturday's contest at Mississippi State will mark the 1,000th career game coached for John Calipari. He is 776-223 (.777) all-time with stops at Kentucky, Memphis and UMass. He's in his 12th season at Kentucky, the longest stop of what is now his 29th season as a college head coach.

Calipari remains the only coach in NCAA history with at least 189 victories at three different schools and is the second-winningest coach in school history. After Saturday's game -- win or lose -- only three Division I coaches will have more wins through their first 1,000 career games than Calipari.

Most Wins Through First 1,000 Games:
Adolph Rupp - 824
Roy Williams - 790
Jerry Tarkanian - 784 (only coached 989 games)
John Calipari - 776
Dean Smith - 776

S-E-C! S-E-C! S-E-C!

Kentucky is the Southeastern Conference's gold standard. Since the SEC's inception in 1932-33, the Wildcats are the most dominant team in the league, recording a 1,012-284 mark (.781) in regular-season conference play. Only two other teams have won more than 750 regular-season SEC games (Alabama and Tennessee), and no other team owns a better winning percentage.

• Kentucky has averaged 11.6 wins and only 3.3 losses per season in 87 seasons in the SEC
• UK has won 49 SEC regular-season titles and 31 SEC Tournament championships
• The Wildcats have won 16 of the last 28 SEC Tournaments (the 2020 one was not played due to the COVID-19 pandemic)
• Kentucky has captured at least a share of six of the last 11 SEC regular-season championships under John Calipari
• UK has played in the championship game of the SEC Tournament in eight of Calipari's 11 seasons, winning six times
• Kentucky won its 1,000th game in SEC regular-season action vs. Alabama on Jan. 11, 2020. Kansas has won 1,000 conference games when combining its records in the Big 6, Big 7, Big 8 and Big 12, but no other team in the country had won 1,000 or more regular-season league games in one conference alone
• Seven teams made the 2019 NCAA Tournament field, tied for the second most of any league in the country
• The SEC had two teams in the Elite Eight, one in the Final Four and went 12-7 in NCAA Tournament games in 2019
• The SEC has held its own in the annual Big 12/SEC Challenge. The conferences are 20-20 over the last four seasons in the yearly January showdown
• Twelve SEC schools ranked in the top 100 and six in the top 50 in the final 2020 NCAA Net Evaluation Tool rankings

A New Season

The Wildcats will try to put a difficult nonconference season behind them with the start of Southeastern Conference play. Outside of the historical domination outlined above, there are a couple of good omens heading into league play.

Kentucky's Saturday opponent, Mississippi State, has not beaten UK in the John Calipari era, the only team in the league that has yet to register a win vs. the Wildcats in the Calipari era. Kentucky is 14-0 vs. the Bulldogs under Calipari, and Calipari is 15-0 in his career vs. Mississippi State.

Additionally, UK is 9-2 in the opening game of the SEC season under Calipari and 8-3 under Calipari in the first SEC road game of the year. UK is 67-19 all-time in SEC openers.
