Fresh Thyme Has a New Name, Logo - Progressive Grocer

fresh.indah.link

Fresh Thyme Farmers Market is changing its name, and a slew of other things as the company redefines its approach to serving shoppers.

The company is changing its name from Fresh Thyme Farmers Markets to Fresh Thyme Market. In addition, it will unveil a new logo and marketing campaign on Aug. 30.

"In this year of rapid consumer change, Fresh Thyme has continued to change as well, ensuring that their name and logo match up with customers' needs and expectations. The new logo encapsulates this change for the Fresh Thyme brand and its purpose. With clear and authentic messaging, Fresh Thyme aims to provide support for those looking for real solutions for wellness. The new design drives straighter towards who Fresh Thyme really is and the retailer's promise to customers," the company said in a statement.

In tandem with their new logo, Fresh Thyme will kick off a new advertising campaign with the debut of an ad titled, "This Is Real," starring real Fresh Thyme shoppers. Cast while shopping in the retailer's home city of Chicago, the ad highlights the diversity and uniqueness of the Fresh Thyme customer. Created in partnership with The Distillery Project, the commercial showcases three families preparing and eating dinner in their own homes.

"Fresh Thyme has always been a solution for healthy living, no matter the circumstance," says Fresh Thyme Market Chief Merchandising and Marketing Officer, Tod Pepin. "As we all continue to navigate this new normal, Fresh Thyme is dedicated to helping people meet a new standard and heightened responsibility towards their own wellbeing. Our new logo and advertising campaign is an intentional evolution in that direction, and we are thrilled to share it with our community."

The ad emphasizes that as the world continues to change, it has become harder for people to know what is real. In the midst of it all, Fresh Thyme shoppers are quietly taking control of their health and well-being by eating real, healthy foods.

Fresh Thyme is partially backed by Meijer, which has been an investor since the specialty chain's founding. In July, Fresh Thyme added Shipt delivery to its arsenal of consumer offerings.

Salmonella outbreak linked to fresh peaches spreads to three more states - Food Safety News

fresh.indah.link

Since its Aug. 19 update on a Salmonella outbreak linked to fresh peaches, the CDC has added 10 patients and three more states to its tally. Additional products have been recalled.

Most of the recalled Wawona and Prima Wawona peaches were sold in bulk bins where shoppers select the fruit piece by piece, according to today’s update from the Centers for Disease Control and prevention. There are now 78 confirmed patients across 12 states in the outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis infections.

Wawona Packing Co. has expanded its recall to include all bulk peaches shipped through Aug. 3. Wawona peaches sold in bags under various brands are also under recall. Many grocery retailers have recalled peaches because of the outbreak. Also, peach salsa from Russ Davis Wholesale has been recalled, along with a limited number of gift baskets that include fresh peaches. The recalled peach salsa was sold under three brand names and labeled as “Perfectly Peach Salsa.”

Canadian officials report 33 Salmonella infections in their country have been liked to the U.S. outbreak. Various Wawona peaches are under recall in Canada. As of today officials in New Zealand and Singapore reported the implicated peaches had been imported into their countries, but they have not reported any confirmed illnesses.

Public health officials are urging consumers who have any of the recalled peaches on hand to immediately discard them. For those who have peaches of unknown origin, the agencies recommend “when in doubt, throw it out.” The peaches should be thrown out even if some have been eaten and no one got sick, according to the CDC.

In today’s update, the CDC reports the outbreak illnesses began on dates ranging from June 9 through Aug. 3. Ill people range in age from 1 to 92 years old. Some illnesses might not yet be reported because of the time it takes between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is laboratory confirmed and reported to the CDC. This takes an average of two to four weeks.

Of 67 ill people with available information, 23 hospitalizations have been reported. No deaths have been reported. Of 45 people with information available, 38, or 84 percent, reported eating fresh peaches in the week before their illnesses started. Of the 31 people who reported information on how the peaches were packaged, 19, or 61 percent, reported buying loose peaches and 12, or 39 percent, reported buying pre-bagged peaches.

The Food and Drug Administration is continuing its investigation of the outbreak, along with the CDC, Canadian officials, and state and provincial authorities.

Amazon’s first Fresh grocery store opens with high-tech Dash shopping carts - The Verge

fresh.indah.link

Amazon will open its first Fresh grocery store for in-person shopping on an invite-only basis starting this week, and will open to the general public in the coming weeks, the company has announced. Located in the Woodland Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, the store will sell food like pizzas and sandwiches that are prepared on site, as well as a range of items from national and local brands. It’s intended as a cheaper alternative to Amazon’s Whole Foods stores, according to CBNC.

Amazon’s latest grocery store configuration is packed with technology but will not use its “Just Walk Out” cashierless tech. The Fresh store in LA is the first location where shoppers will be able to use Amazon’s Dash Carts, which you log into using the Amazon app and are equipped with cameras and sensors to identify which items you drop in. The cart is compatible with a shopping list made using Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant. You can then automatically pay without having to wait in line at the checkout. Amazon says there will also be Echo Show devices dotted around the store to help users find their way around.

The store will feature Amazon’s new smart shopping cart.
Photo: Amazon

By contrast, the Go Grocery store Amazon recently opened in Seattle uses a series of overhead cameras and pressure sensitive shelves to automatically detect what customers buy, allowing them to purchase items by simply walking out of the store. It’s thought that Amazon’s “Just Walk Out” tech is difficult to scale to the new 35,000 square-foot Fresh store. CNET reports that the LA Fresh store is significantly bigger that its 10,400 square-foot Amazon Go Grocery store in Seattle. Nevertheless, there are reports that Amazon may start bringing the Go-store technology to Whole Foods supermarkets as early as next year.

Although this is the first time an Amazon Fresh will open for in-person shopping, the store has been used to fulfill online orders since April. Speaking to CNBC, the vice president of Amazon’s Fresh stores said this wasn’t its “initial plan,” but that the company responded to the surge in demand for online orders caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Amazon declined to comment to CNBC on when its other online-only Fresh stores in Naperville in Chicago and Irvine and Northridge, California, will open to the public.

The Amazon Fresh store will continue to offer online shopping services in addition to in-person shopping. Amazon says it will offer free same-day delivery for Prime members, and there are also in-store pickup options for online orders. Customers can pick up orders from an in-store service counter, or else by using a “dedicated pick-up parking spot.”

Amazon says the store will be using a number of measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Capacity will be limited to 50 percent, and both customers and employees will be required to wear face coverings while in the store. Customers will be offered free disposable masks, and employees will have their temperature checked on a daily basis.

KitchenMate makes it easy to cook fresh meals at work - TechCrunch

fresh.indah.link

KitchenMate is a Toronto-based startup promising businesses a fresh approach to feeding their employees.

The startup has raised $3.5 million in seed funding led by Eniac Ventures and Golden Ventures, with participation from FJ Labs and Techstars. It’s also expanding into the United States.

Founder and CEO Yang Yu said KitchenMate was founded with the goal of providing “healthy meals at an affordable cost.” The solution he and his team developed combines refrigerated, tamper-proof “smart meal-pods” containing fresh, prepared meals that are then heated in a “smart cooker.”

You might think a pandemic is the wrong time for this idea, since so many companies are still working from home. And Yu acknowledged that some of KitchenMate’s most likely customers (such as tech companies) don’t need the product right now.

At the same time, he said there are many “old-school companies” in industries like manufacturing, distribution and essential services that can’t operate that way — and in those sectors, business is “booming.”

“[Before the pandemic,] it was a nice-to-have for a lot of companies that care about employees and want to offer them a healthy meal,” he said. “It’s become a must-have for a lot of companies now that everything is closed.”

In other words, Yu said that with many restaurants and other businesses shuttered by the pandemic, KitchenMate has emerged for some employers as “the only option.” He also said it’s being used by hospitals as an efficient way to prepare healthy meals for patients.

Without a KitchenMate Smart Cooker at home, I can’t vouch for the quality of the food, but Yu showed me how he prepared a meal in the KitchenMate office: He opened the refrigerator, removed a Smart Meal-Pod and scanned it with his phone, then loaded the Meal-Pod into the cooker. A few minutes later, a tasty-looking lunch of rice, curry, vegetables and tofu was ready for him.

KitchenMate offers the equipment for sale or rent to employers. The meals are then purchased by employees via smartphone app at an average cost of $9, usually with employees paying $7 and employers subsidizing the rest.

KitchenMate delivers new Meal-Pods once or twice a week, and teams can influence what gets delivered by voting on the dishes that they want. The startup also offers an option where staff members can prepare the meals for employees, rather than having everyone raid the refrigerator and making meals for themselves.

Yu suggested that as offices reopen, people will want to avoid crowded cafeterias, and they’ll choose KitchenMate’s bulk deliveries over having lots of individual deliveries going in and out of buildings and elevators.

Yu acknowledged that there is a risk of a “backlog” in the kitchen if everyone wants their lunch at the same time, but he said KitchenMate tries to alleviate this issue by allowing people to pre-order their meals in the app.

“We create more flexibility around people eating for a lot of companies who either can’t afford catering or, post-COVID, it’s just not possible anymore to have shared meals,” he said.

Consumer Reports takes consumers by hand on fresh produce and pesticides - Food Safety News

fresh.indah.link

Everybody knows the story about Goldilocks and the Three Bears and that porridge that was too cold and  too hot but was finally “just right.”  Consumer Reports is looking at coming out “just right” in a new study about fresh produce and pesticides.

And its a study involving the same set of facts that are subject to differing interpretation and even presentation, so it can be confusing, And like that porridge, opinions abound about fresh produce because they are now available year-round because of the growth of imports.

Anybody can have an opinion because everybody works off the same set of facts—USDA’s annual test results from putting fruits and vegetables through the lab to see if any of about 450 pesticides can be detected. And there’s also the reality that fruits and vegetables contribute to good health.

Over the years, enough scare tactics have likely caused some people to swear off eating fruits and vegetables because of the role pesticides play, but in doing so have caused themselves more harm. Consumer Reports is out today with a report entitled “Stop Eating Pesticides” to show their readers how to get the health benefits from eating fruits and vegetables while avoiding the toxic chemicals.

Consumer Reports, published since 1936, accepts no advertising and pays for all the products it tests along with all its other research including the pesticide study reported in the magazine today. CR makes it clear that eating less produce is a big mistake.

“More than 80 percent of Americans already fall short of the recommended amounts of at least 2 and 1/2 cups of vegetables and 2 cups of fruits per day for most adults,” CR reports. “Instead you can minimize the risk by choosing fruits and vegetables grown with fewer and safer pesticides.”

The CR report includes a “Guide to the Produce Aisle” that uses color bars to suggest when non-organics are unlikely to be harmful or when organic might be the safer choice. CR also explores the six “most concerning pesticides on produce.”

Included on that list with CR’s comment are:

  1. Acephate. This pesticide can break down into a chemical called methamidophos, a compound banned as a pesticide in the U.S. since 2009 because it’s a neurotoxin, meaning it damages the brain and nervous system.
  2.  Chlorpropham. Used to keep potatoes from sprouting, this pesticide is banned in the EU because it may interfere with hormones in the body. It was found in concerning amounts on nearly every sample of nonorganic U.S.-grown potatoes and 96 percent of imported ones. It also was found in all domestic organic potatoes, although at much lower levels.
  3. Chlorpyrifos. This neurotoxin was on the brink of being banned in 2016, but the EPA reversed course after intense lobbying from the pesticide industry. It contributes significantly to the risk in nonorganic peaches.
  4. Cyhalothrin. Thought to interfere with the body’s neuromuscular system, it’s the major contributor to the risk in cherries and was found in more than half of nonorganic U.S.-grown samples, fresh and frozen.
  5.  Famoxadone. Some research suggests that this pesticide is a hormone disruptor. CR believes it should not be used on food until more is known about its safety. It’s the main reason both non-organic and U.S.-grown organic spinach fare poorly in our ratings.
  6.  Fludioxonil. This is one of several risky fungicides that’s used after harvest, and it’s thought to have hormone-disrupting effects. It’s primarily responsible for the high risk of nonorganic fresh peaches and nectarines.

On a special note, CR said “headline-making pesticides” Glyphosate and Dicamba should be probated but are not used on fruits and vegetables.

The ratings issued by CR in the report are based on USDA pesticide data from 2014 to 2018, a total of about 24,000 samples. The ratings take into account servings of fruits and vegetables that a person might consume over a lifetime, including serving sizes.

CR also says the federal policies concerning pesticides need work. “Many federal policies should be altered to protect consumers from harms of pesticides, said Brian Ronholm, CR’s director of food policy. He says it is particularly important is a system to quickly identify banned pesticides on imported produce to keep the product out of the country

Previously, Ronholm served as USDA’s deputy undersecretary for food safety.

“The USDA must also take steps to maintain the integrity of the organic program and help farmers transition to organic, which will make the organic option more widely available,” Ronholm to the magazine. CR says the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) should ban the use of the riskiest pesticides and use the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA) safety factor or safety margin.

CR finds organic choices are usually good, it did find organic U.S-grown spinach with 33 different pesticides in 76 percent of the samples, making it indistinguishable from the non-organic product.

And CR found almost half of the non-organic fruits and vegetables posed little risk. The worst score for non-organics went to fresh green beans, potatoes, and peaches. Where the non-organics don’t score well is when CR suggests hitting the organic aisle.

Organics do have a pricey reputation, but CR finds that it varies by season and region and often is not as much in reality.
