BUNNY IN THE CITY: Fresh air markets, fundraisers must mean it’s Saturday - Savannah Morning News

Summer Saturday’s in Savannah mean fresh air markets, pool days and fundraisers, so I hit the road in my four-wheel drive vehicle to catch up with the gorgeous Weslyn Bowers aka Lady Mahogany.

Having missed the ninth annual Back to School Giveaway held earlier at 9 a.m. Aug. 15, I turn off of Interstate 516 and meander back to 1210 Myers St. and find tents, tables and talent set up for August’s Fresh Air Market Pop Up Shop. Passing Gigi’s Italian Ice and Quick Candids, I find Lady M. talking with Modish owner McCall Sims.

Looking super fit, Lady Mahogany poses with McCall, does a prefect one-take video and then tells me, "This is a great place for local entrepreneurs to have a safe way to earn funds, get visibility and network during this pandemic." True words!

With a virtual hug to deejay "Carlitobaby" Charles Singleton, I ask him to pose with affiliate sponsor Regina Okirike with Maximum Tax Services before grabbing a piece of praline pound cake from Nitra Sweets. People! Y’all have to come out this Saturday just to meet Nitra Roberson and her momma Linda Graham and ask to sample their scrumptious fresh baked cinnamon rolls!

Wheeling over to the Grand Lake Club, I bypass Don Scott singing Elvis songs and find Lisa Vickery in the cabana setting up her Save the Manatees candles. The local artisan is serious in her quest to bring awareness to my favorite sea cows and reluctantly poses for a pic before I head to a fundraiser in Port Wentworth.

Last week, when local handyman Eric Shaktman heard about Joe Burroughs and his family losing their home, cars and pets in a fire, he called friends and neighbors in the Lake Shore Subdivision and started organizing a fundraiser in his front yard on Raintree Way. "I didn’t know Joe but could see the fire from our house. God put it on my heart to do something for them," shares the benevolent neighbor.

After posing Eric with his Dream Team Katelin Smith, Carla Godwin and Avril Roy-Smith, he tells me how neighbors, Wood’s Seafood and especially Joey’s Convenience Store all stepped to supply food, money and donations. Following Eric over to where Joe is hanging out with deejay Peter Oleniuch, I convince the slightly reluctant trio to take off glasses, masks and hats for a pic then take a seat to talk with Joe.

"We lost everything. In 25 minutes, the house and car were gone – our two cats and two dogs – gone. Red Cross came in and helped but having total strangers stop what they are doing to help my family – this has been the most amazing part," shares the Gulfstream aircraft coordinator.

Loading hot dogs and chicken off the grill, Tyshan Bentley pauses to wave his daughter Tamia and wife Valenicia over for pic, Michael Gill tells me, "I’m here to support my boss Joe," and uber chatty Sallie Holland graciously pulls a seat out for me after I take a pic of her with Joe, her husband Michael, Lisa Thomas and Joe’s roommate Scotty Lee Ranson.

"Joe heard about my living situation in California, sent me a one way Greyhound ticket to Savannah, handed me a seat of keys and helped me get on my feet," shares Scotty. "I was there that night and even though I have had some hard times, Joe and this community, even a Rincon police officer who paid for a hotel room for the night, have all lent a hand," shares the former music teacher.

This is why I drove all the way out to a little neighborhood off Highway 30. Every week I hear of yet another story that confirms that our world is filled with people whose one action can change the way someone lives their life. From Lady Mahogany helping single moms, Lisa Vickery saving manatees and Eric raising money for a family he had never meet, I have faith that we are all going to be okay!

By the way, Eric, his Dream Team and neighbors raised $5,500 in one afternoon!

During these events, if people are wearing face masks, I suggest they remove the mask, I quickly take the photo, and they put the face mask back on.
