Downtown Marion’s coffee destination has a new location with plans for expansion and some exciting features.

Founded in 2014, Ingenious Coffee Roasters is a small batch roasting company and wholesale distributor of coffee beans to restaurants, cafes, coffee shops and other businesses throughout western North Carolina and other states. The business gets large sacks of coffee beans from countries in Central America, South America, Africa and Indonesia. In recent years, the business was at 23 N. Main St., which used to be the home of It Can Be Arranged.

But recently, Ingenious Coffee Roasters moved further downtown to 140 S. Main and has a new home in the former Second Chance Furniture building.

Owner and operator Eli Ornberg told The McDowell News he decided to move Ingenious Coffee Roasters to 140 S. Main because he wanted a fresh start. He also wanted more room for a first-class coffee shop and a full-fledged retail business.

After 20 years as a downtown Marion mainstay, the Crooked Door Coffee House closed its doors permanently earlier this year after it was sold to a company in another state. Ornberg’s parents, Mike and Ellen Ornberg, founded the Crooked Door and first opened it in 2001. After it shut its doors, their son realized that something worthy needed to take the Crooked Door’s place.

“Marion deserves a really good shop,” he said to The McDowell News.

Ornberg will continue his wholesale distribution business at the new 140 S. Main St. location. The back part of the building is devoted to production.

When the green coffee beans arrive, Ornberg puts them in his roaster. After he roasts the beans, he adds the oils which give some types of coffee their flavor. That work is done in the building’s basement.

When the coffee beans are roasted and cooled, they are taken to the production area at the center of the building where they are packaged and prepared for sale. Ingenious Coffee Roasters can deliver or ship out to various coffee shops or eateries that carry their products. They can also come by and get it at the store. Their blends can be found at restaurants and coffee shops all over western North Carolina. Ornberg has also done a lot of business in Florida.

He has 30 different flavors of coffee and nine different single origins or blends. He and his dad have experimented with nitrous coffee, which is served cold and looks a lot like beer. It can be kegged like beer and is much stronger than regular coffee.

Furthermore, he is working to create Keurig-style pods for his coffee.

Ornberg has exciting plans for the front part of the building. A new coffee shop is there with tables and chairs for comfortable seating.

Since he opened at 140 S. Main, Ornberg has seen lots of familiar faces.

“Ninety percent of our customers here at our new location are customers we served for 15 years at the Crooked Door,” he said to The McDowell News. “We take the time to get to know the customers.”

Ornberg plans to add more tables and a couch for a “homey” atmosphere. He also wants to redo the lights and the floor to change the look of the interior. While sipping their coffee, customers will be able to see the process of brewing it.

Furthermore, he is hoping to receive a grant from the Marion Business Association. If he receives this grant, he will add some outdoor furniture from another Main Street Hero: Flavors on Main. This will provide an outdoor seating area.

In addition to Ornberg and his dad, Ingenious Coffee Roasters has a new barista, Temple Miller, to make and serve the coffees and other beverages. Natasha Johnson works in production and packaging. She is also training to be a barista. Tim McKinney works as a roaster.

Ingenious Coffee Roasters is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. It will be open Saturdays but the hours have yet to be decided, said Ornberg.

Customers will need to wear masks to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As he makes his new home at 140 S. Main St., Ornberg said he’s looking forward to providing a coffee-oriented version of “Cheers.” This new coffee shop can be “where everybody knows your name,” he said.

“You don’t know how excited I am about the community having a gathering place, getting to know the customers,” he said.
