Farmers markets got off to a late start in 2020 as organizers navigated health and safety concerns related to COVID-19. Now many are extending their schedules further into fall to expand access to fresh produce.

City-run markets in the Austin, West Humboldt Park and Bronzeville neighborhoods are among those that have added dates to their schedule.

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, which manages city-run markets, announced Tuesday that the Austin Town Hall market will continue through Oct. 29, the West Humboldt Park market will run through Oct. 10, and Bronzeville's market has been extended through Sept. 27.

The complete list of city-run and independent farmers markets is available online. The majority of markets will be open through mid- to late October, with a handful running into November and even December.

All markets were required to register their social distancing plans with the city before opening.

Among the rules in place: Face coverings are required at all times at all markets. Vendor booths are spaced six feet apart and markets have designated entry and exit points. Only vendors are permitted to handle produce.
