PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) - He’s highly-skilled and was rewarded with a huge contract, but 26-year-old defenseman Mike Matheson fell out of favor with the Florida and now finds himself a Penguin after being traded for Patric Hornqvist Thursday.

“I think for me, It’s definitely a great opportunity for a fresh start, I think it’s a welcome fresh start for me and I’m super excited to make the most of it,” said Matheson.

Matheson said when he played against the Penguins he always felt his style would fit with their game.

Matheson isn’t getting a lot of love from media and fans alike, given his struggles in Florida the past two seasons, but he’s thrilled to be a Penguin.

“It’s a team that I think plays a game that complements the way I like to play, and the fact that I’m fortunate enough to have a longer-term contract hopefully means that I’ll be able to stay with them for a long time,” said Matheson.

Hornqvist, whose contract includes a no-trade clause, said Friday he has great memories in Pittsburgh, but when the Penguins decided they didn’t want him it was an easy decision to join the Panthers. He admitted that he was "blindsided"by the trade.
