WarnerMedia’s HBO Max is set to air a “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” cast reunion in November as it makes a big push for its streaming service and already has “The West Wing” and “Friends” reunions in the works.
KEY FACTS
The special will be taped on September 10 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the series, which aired on that date in 1990, HBO Max confirmed in a statement emailed to Forbes.
Executives from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” star Will Smith’s production studio Westbrook Media will be executive producers.
HBO Max has exclusive streaming rights to all 148 episodes of the series which originally aired on NBC.
This is the third cast reunion of a hit 1990s-to-early-2000s TV show to be signed to the streaming service, following “The West Wing” and “Friends.”
“The West Wing” cast will come together for a filmed theatrical performance in October to raise awareness for Michelle Obama’s nonpartisan organization When We All Vote, HBO Max announced last week.
HBO Max’s much-anticipated “Friends” reunion special was supposed to be part of the May launch, but it has been repeatedly delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
tangent
Earlier this month, it was announced that Smith will be developing a dramatic series reboot based on a viral trailer “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” fan Morgan Cooper uploaded to YouTube in March 2019. It has been viewed more than 6 million times. The reboot, which sets “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” in 2019, has reportedly been in development for more than a year, ever since the video caught Smith’s attention.
