The Arkansas state legislature recently approved $10 million in stimulus money to assist tenants behind on their rent payments, culminating in the Arkansas COVID-19 Fresh Start Housing Stabilization Program.
The program is designed to assist renters who make up to 80% of their area’s median income. The program can assist in paying up to two-and-a-half month’s worth of past-due rent.
Friday, the Central Arkansas Development Council announced its participation in the program starting Monday, November 9
.According to the CADC’s Lavel Neal, applicants begin by filling out a form with basic information, available online at ARFreshStart.com.
Eligible applicants will then be given a full application and will need to provide documents such as their identification and lease agreements. The CADC will contact landlords and, in general, work on approving the application.
Information will also be gathered, such as the number of bedrooms and other details about the rented property, to determine the rent value of the property.
Neal said part of the CADC’s focus will be on making sure applicants fill out all necessary forms with the correct info.
“We’ll be assisting with the applications for those without access to the internet or those who aren’t so tech savvy. We’re also coming up with a paper format so they can fill it out and we can put it in the system for them,” Neal said.
The program will, according to the AR Fresh Start website, be open for as long as funds are available.
Funding for the program was made available through the federal CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security) Act and the Arkansas Economic Development Commission.
