NILES — Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership (TNP) is teaming up with the coalition of Flying High, GROW Urban Farm and Creating Healthy Communities (CHC) to expand efforts to increase fresh produce offerings here.

As a result, fresh produce will be delivered next week to Cottage Market, 2318 Robbins Ave.

“The need for expanding healthy food options in convenience stores has grown exponentially due to the presence of food deserts within our community," said Kris Kriebel, Health Educator with CHC, in a news release. "Access to affordable, healthy food options due to the absence of grocery stores within traveling distance is a major concern.

"By providing healthy food options, such as fresh produce, this initiative opens the door for residents to make the healthy choice the easy choice," Kriebel said.

The coalition is part of the Trumbull County Combined Health District.

CHC is committed to preventing and reducing chronic disease, along with addressing food insecurity throughout the county and state.

This collaboration highlights the expansion of the Healthy Convenience Store Initiative throughout Trumbull County while alleviating financial and distribution barriers for store owners have when trying to expand their fresh produce offerings.

The Trumbull Combined Health District released the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) in 2019 displaying Mental Health and Addiction, Chronic Disease, and Maternal Health and Infant Health data throughout Trumbull County.

The CHIP also highlights barriers of the Trumbull County residents, stating “28 percent of African Americans that live in Warren lack healthy food access outside of a 2+ mile radius.”

TNP released the 2017 Community Food Security Access Plan addressing the food insecurity throughout Warren. The plan highlights the lack of grocery stores within the southern portion of the city.

Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership is a nonprofit community development corporation serving the neighborhoods of Warren.  For more information, visit www.tnpwarren.org.
