“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” had its unforgettable debut more than 30 years ago, in the fall of 1990.
Shortly after a couple of guys who were up to no good started making trouble in Will Smith’s neighborhood, he became a household name.
Now the trailer for the “Fresh Prince” reunion on HBO Max is here. And the name “Aunt Viv” — the original Aunt Viv — is on everyone’s lips.
Smith first shared photos from the taping in September, showing that Janet Hubert, the original Aunt Viv on the show, had buried the hatchet after a long feud with Smith and reunited with the actor.
Hubert, who lives in Montclair, filmed a reunion segment with Smith separate from the sitcom’s other cast members, who appear surprised by her return. It’s Smith and Hubert’s first on-camera appearance together in 27 years.
The actress left the show in 1993 — the series ran until 1996 — and was replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid.
“I couldn’t celebrate 30 years of ‘Fresh Prince’ without Janet,” Smith says in the trailer for the reunion, which premieres Thursday, Nov. 19.

While Hubert has explicitly stated on Instagram that she doesn’t want to answer questions about the feud that resulted in her exit from the show, her one-on-one with Smith appears to be a happy one.
The rest of the cast — Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton Banks), Tatyana Ali (Ashley Banks), Karyn Parsons (Hilary Banks), Joseph Marcell (Geoffrey), Daphne Maxwell Reid (Aunt Viv No. 2) and DJ Jazzy Jeff (Jazz) — comes together on a recreation of the show’s set.
“There will always be a piece of us in that living room,” Ribeiro says in the trailer, released Friday.
“Our show meant Black excellence to people,” Ali says. “The excellence was the way that we loved each other.”
The cast also remembers James Avery, who played Uncle Phil. The actor died in 2013. Ali calls him “the heart of the show.”
Individual actor interviews and behind-the-scenes stories revisit the show’s ’90s heyday, like the fact that DJ Jazzy Jeff turned down the show multiple times before Smith convinced him to sign on.
“These are the people who made me the man I am today,” Smith said, sharing the trailer on Instagram.
“Fresh Prince” has been enjoying something of a renaissance (not that it ever really went away).
HBO Max featured the classic TV show as part of the streaming service’s debut in May. And “Bel-Air,” a dramatic retelling of the “Fresh Prince” concept, is in the works at Peacock, NBC’s streaming service, after Morgan Cooper’s viral parody trailer got the attention of Smith himself, who became an executive producer of the project.
