Fresh Rx, a local nonprofit founded to provide fresh produce as part of medical patients’ dietary treatment plans, once again is branching out.
After hosting farm-based fundraising dinners last year, the organization, co-founded by Palm Beach resident Margaret Duriez, now is launching new initiatives to support its expanded programming.
The new fund-raising ventures include offering fresh produce-focused meal-delivery options and chef-driven dining experiences people can enjoy at home.
“As we continue to navigate the pandemic, we’ve seen an increased demand for fresh, organic fruits and vegetables that are proven to boost the immune system,” Duriez said in a press release. “We’ve developed a series of offerings that allow people to enjoy a chef-inspired, healthy meal with their families in the comfort of their own homes while supporting nutritionally vulnerable members of our community.”
Duriez, who owns Lox Farms in Loxahatchee with her husband, Franck, co-founded Fresh Rx in 2018 with a program aimed at providing fresh produce to oncology, cardiology, neurology (stroke) and pediatric patients in the community whose doctors have advised them to change their diets as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
Two new programs include one that educates school kids about nutrition and growing food gardens, and another slated to soon start distributing fresh produce to underserved South Florida neighborhoods.
To support all of that, Fresh Rx is working with chef-partners — among them, Kent Thurston of Cucina and Chef Pierangelo Badioli of Acqua Café — to offer people the opportunity to:
- Order a four-course vegetarian or fish-focused meal prepared by a Fresh Rx chef-partner and paired with cocktails by mixologist Jules Aron. It’s all delivered to your door. The cost is $175 per person; a minimum guest-count of four people is required.
- Order a four-course meal a Fresh Rx chef-partner prepares in your home with locally sourced ingredients, plus cocktail pairings. Wine pairings by Virginia Philip are included for parties of 10 or more, according to a press release. The cost is $500 per person; a minimum of eight people is required.
- Enjoy a virtual cooking lesson with Food Network personality/chef/restaurateur Marc Murphy. According to Fresh Rx, Murphy will show guests how to prepare some of his favorite dishes using ingredients delivered to your door the morning of a scheduled lesson. Wine pairings and specialty cocktails are included. Virtual cooking classes, $1,500 each, are Jan. 12, Feb. 16, March 16, and April 13.
Fresh Rx sources ingredients involved in its programs from area farms.
