Portland residents reeling from the coronavirus pandemic will be able to apply online this week for a fresh round of $500 cash cards to help cover the cost of food, medical bills and other urgent expenses.
But they shouldn’t expect to receive the assistance until after Christmas or the New Year.
The application window for 4,000 new prepaid debit cards will run Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. through the city’s PDX Assist website.
A lottery will then determine which of the applicants get the $500 gift cards to ensure each has an equal shot at receiving one.
The cards are expected to arrive at recipients’ homes within four weeks, according to the website.
The funds come from the $114 million in federal coronavirus aid sent to Portland earlier this year.
The Portland Housing Bureau used $36 million of that money to deliver housing relief for those facing health and economic setbacks during the pandemic, including direct cash assistance.
Previously, the city partnered with the United Way of Columbia-Willamette in October to distribute 2,800 debit cards worth $500 each.
The city has said it expects to help 27,000 Portlanders through its Household Assistance Program through the end of the year.
Eligible applicants must indicate they are over age 18, live in Portland and have a household income at or below 80% of the area median income, according to the housing bureau.
That’s $58,960 for a household of two people, $73,680 for a household of four and $85,520 for a household of six.
Up to four adults living in the same household are eligible to apply for and receive the cash assistance.
