PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Ben Roethlisberger took a long time to leave the field after a long talk on the bench with Maurkice Pouncey. Will Ben retire?
Ben didn’t really answer.
“This loss is fresh,” Roethlisberger said. “It’s just sitting on our hearts and our minds right now. It will for a while.”
For as disappointing as the loss was, throwing four interceptions, along with four touchdowns and 501 yards in a playoff defeat at home to Cleveland, 48-37. Roethlisberger says he still loves football.
“I enjoy the guys,” Roethlisberger said. “Missed the fans this year. Obviously, that’s a big part of this game. We’ve got the best fans in the world. I need to apologize to them for tonight, the rest of my teammates, for the way I played. Very disappointing. But I enjoy playing this game for those reasons.”
“That’s something he has to discuss with his family,” said defensive captain Cam Heyward of Roethlisberger’s future. “Would I love him to come back? Of course. Ben has been a heck of a teammate. Whether it’s battling back from injury. Being a leader on the field. It’s been a pleasure to play with him.”
“It’s a luxury to have a quarterback like that and a person like that, who’s grown. He’s going to be a Hall of Famer one day. To say that I got to play with a guy like that is pretty special.”
“I just said I’m so thankful to have you as a quarterback and I wouldn’t change it for anywhere else,” receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster said of his conversation with Roethlisberger after the game. “I don’t know what your plans are or what God has planned for you. I’m truly thankful for it. Ben taking me under his wing. Ben told me ‘you fought hard, you are a warrior. I thank you’.”
As for how Roethlisberger will make the decision.
“It’s going to start between me and God, a lot of praying. A lot of talking with my family, discussions, decisions. I still have a year left on my contract. I hope the Steelers want me back, if that’s the way we go. There will be a lot of discussions. But now it not the time for that.”
Ben admitted he wasn’t good enough Sunday night, but he hasn’t looked at the whole season yet.
“When it doesn’t end the way you want it to, you’re always going to feel some kind of way,” Roethlisberger said. “Like you came up short or it’s your fault.”
