Amazon Fresh opens in Fullerton, just a skip from Costco - OCRegister

Costco shoppers in Fullerton will have another grocery store to check out in virtually the same parking lot: Amazon Fresh.

The grocery store opened its doors Thursday, Feb. 25 in the former Toys R Us at 1100 S. Harbor Boulevard. The store is a short walk from Costco and its gas station.

The Amazon Fresh in Fullerton is the e-commerce giant’s seventh in Southern California and the 10th such grocery store to open in the U.S. The concept debuted in Woodland Hills last September and was soon followed by another Fresh at the Irvine Market Place.

The 45,000-square-foot store in Fullerton offers techy bells whistles Amazon customers have become accustomed to such as geeked-out shopping carts that scan merchandise as customers put items in the basket. Alexa, the artificial intelligence assistant used in millions of American homes, also lives in the aisles, guiding shoppers to goods throughout the store.

Amazon, which also owns Whole Foods, says its Fresh stores offer low-cost groceries that are also available on its same-day shopping apps. (Shoppers should expect to share the aisles with Fresh delivery drivers as they shop for merchandise, too.)

The company’s Dash Cart enables customers to use their Amazon credit card account to skip the checkout line. A traditional checkout exists for non-Amazon subscribers.

The store stocks the usual supermarket inventory including national brands and produce, meat and seafood. An in-house kitchen prepares fresh bread and pizzas, rotisserie chickens, sushi and hot sandwiches.

Some of the low prices Amazon touts are 15-cent organic bananas; 89-cent freshly baked bread; $1.79 freshly baked pizza slices; and $4.97 rotisserie chickens. Deals this week for the Fullerton debut include USDA choice fresh brand beef short ribs for $4.89 per pound; Sumo oranges for $2.49 per pound; red, green or black seedless grapes for $1.99 per pound; and Fuji apples for $0.79 per pound.

The store requires face coverings for customers and staff. Employees and vendors have their temperatures checked daily. Free, disposable face masks are available for those shoppers who want one.

Amazon says it’s operating the store at 35% capacity, so expect a line if you go.

Store hours in Fullerton are 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The store reserves the hour between 7 and 8 a.m. for shoppers who are 60 years and older, those with disabilities and those whom the CDC defines as high risk amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
