With February being one of Michigan’s coldest months, the winter weather can really put a damper on your healthy eating habits. But, as February begins to turn the corner toward Spring, let’s look at some of the best spots in and around Detroit for all your fresh food and healthy eating needs.

From Eastern Market to Banglatown, some markets have closed for the winter season, but that shouldn’t stop your planning for when the warmer months arrive. Shop small and support local with these 7 spots.

EASTERN MARKET

Let’s be honest, who in Detroit doesn’t love Eastern Market? With vendors still operating amid the pandemic and the sheds open, Eastern Market really is the region’s premier spot for fresh veggies and obscure locally made goods.

Looking for a socially distanced way to acquire your eats? Well, you’re in luck. Each week the Market takes orders for food boxes that can be picked up on Saturday from the safety of your own car.

Check out their Shopify to place your order!

GRATIOT CENTRAL MARKET

Technically located within Eastern Market, Gratiot Central Market is an entirely different experience from the Market itself!

The vibrantly painted warehouse is located at 1429 Gratiot ave. and sells some of the freshest locally sourced meats and seafood in all of Metro Detroit. If you’re a meat-eater, then this spot will need to be on your list during your next visit to Eastern Market.

BANGLATOWN FARMERS MARKET

Surrounded by Detroit on all sides, Hamtramck is a unique complex-like community unlike any other in Metro Detroit. Located at 12818 Joseph Campau and open every Saturday, the Banglatown Market is another great spot for all your fresh food needs.

With locally grown produce, the market is a great spot for Bangladeshi and Asian locally grown vegetables, ingredients, and more.

Be sure to add this spot to your weekend shopping list!

NORTHWEST DETROIT FARMERS’ MARKET

While some Markets are open year-round, others operate seasonally. But that shouldn’t stop you in your quest to map out every farmer’s market in and around Detroit!

Located at 18445 Scarsdale St., the Northwest Detroit Farmers Market serves its community well from the Spring until mid-October. Organized by the Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation nonprofit, be sure to check them out, as their work in the northwest Detroit community spans from neighborhood beautification efforts to operating co-working spaces. A few great things to consider as we near the startup of operations for the market.

EAST WARREN AVENUE FARMERS MARKET

The East Warren Avenue Farmers Market is another crucial community resource for Detroiters. Part of the E Warren Development Corp, the farmers market operates every Thursday from 3-7 pm at 14600 Mac Avenue. All locally sourced, this is another great option to add to your list if you’re looking to grab some mid-week vegetables.

D-TOWN FARM

Located in Detroit’s Rouge Park, D-Town Farms is a seven-acre organic farm serving the west-side. Growing more than 30 different fruits, vegetables, and herbs, the farm sells through farmers’ markets or directly to consumers from the property. A part of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network (DBCFSN), the organization is working to establish justice and food sovereignty in the city.

DOWNTOWN WINDSOR FARMERS MARKET

While the border may be closed, we didn’t forget about our friends across the river. Once the weather turns warm, (and we can cross the border again!) don’t forget to check out the Downtown Windsor Farmers Market for locally grown, organic produce, herbs, and more. For us Detroiters, we’ll be sure to stop by once regular travel resumes!
