KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The owner of Fresh Market donated $30,000 worth of nonperishable foods to two northeast Kansas City organizations.

The Gathering Table and Healing House received multiple truckloads of food on Wednesday from the grocery store. Subhi Zaben, Fresh Market manager and the owner's son, said he sees the need in his community.

“We see a lot of people that are using benefits such as EBT, WIC, you know, different benefits from the government,” Zaben said. “We like to help out as much as we can.”

Pastor Ann Rundquist with the Gathering Table Lutheran Church said the church served more than 10,000 meals last year – twice the number served in 2019. She said she knows the need is there, and now the church will be able to better meet that need.

“We've wanted to start a pantry, and we didn't have the resources," Rundquist said, "and voila, now we do."

This all came together in just a few days. On Monday, Fresh Market's owner called the Northeast Chamber of Commerce wanting to donate food. Chamber leaders called Rundquist, who contacted other agencies to see what they needed.
