Following a few years’ absence from the I-75 exit 218 area in McDonough, a new Wendy’s fast food restaurant is slated to open later this year. The franchise will be located at 1169 Highway 20 / 81, site of the Dairy Queen.
Meritage Hospitality Group is the franchisee for the location. They are also the franchisee for the under-construction Wendy’s restaurant in Ola. The Ola location — in front of the new Publix Super Market — is forecast to open in March followed by the McDonough spot in May.
The franchisee, Meritage Hospitality Group, ended 2020 with 340 restaurants open across 16 states. The company is planning to open twenty new Wendy’s and modernize thirty existing locations in 2021.
McDonough Wendy’s
The new McDonough Wendy’s will consist of a 2,584 square foot building situated on approximately one acre of land. The existing Dairy Queen, originally built in 1970, is being demolished.
Moving Henry Forward first learned about the project in fall 2019, but the pandemic inevitably delayed its construction. Marcus & Millichap is handling the sales listing for a prospective landlord. They are also handling the sales listing in Ola.
Separate from the new Wendy’s project, the old vacant structure on Old Industrial Blvd was recently demolished. The building opened in 1978 operating as a Wendy’s location for several decades. No plans have been shared for the property.
Exit 218 Diverging Diamond
Construction continues on the new diverging diamond interchange in McDonough. Motorists can start to see the path of the future entrance ramp to I-75 South thanks to site grading. The contract completion date is April 2022.
When complete, the diverging diamond interchange (DDI) will facilitate better traffic flow through its unique cross-over pattern. This allows shorter traffic signal cycles and less wait time for motorists. The interchange also improves roadway safety because of fewer conflict points and added concrete barriers.
I-75 at state route 20 is the first DDI in Henry County, but existing sites include I-75 at Windy Hill Road in Cobb County and I-285 at Camp Creek Parkway — the newest DDI in Georgia. Sites in Augusta, Columbus and Savannah are concurrently under construction. Finally, planned DDIs include I-85 and SR 138 in Union City, and I-20 at Panola Road in DeKalb County.
