Mazzeo & Armato Bill to Designate ‘Jersey Fresh Season’ Approved by Assembly Committee
(TRENTON) – Aiming to promote the health and nutritional benefits of farm fresh produce grown in New Jersey, a measure sponsored by Assemblymen Vince Mazzeo and John Armato to designate June through September as “Jersey Fresh Season” in New Jersey was recently approved by the Assembly Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee.
The measure (AJR-21) also would request the Governor to issue an annual proclamation calling on public officials and residents and observe Jersey Fresh Season with appropriate activities and programs and authorize the Secretary of Agriculture to recognize certain crops or products each month.
Assemblymen Mazzeo and Armato (both D-Atlantic) released the following joint statement:
“Produce designated as Jersey Fresh is distinctive in both quality and freshness, meeting or exceeding the highest federal standards for produce. All Jersey Fresh produce is grown in the Garden State and harvested at its peak ripened stage for maximum flavor and freshness, ensuring important vitamins and minerals are retained. New Jersey’s agricultural excellence is an essential part of our state’s economy and identity.
“Healthy fruits and vegetables are a crucial part of a balanced diet. Our goal with this measure is to ensure every resident knows the value and importance of eating vitamin-rich foods, especially those grown and harvested right here at home.”
