SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. - Cal Fresh is offering up some extra money to take some of the burdens off of people who are too often wondering where their next meal is coming from.
It’s been almost one year since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out.
“I don't think anyone expected the pandemic to go this long,” said Shannon Kelley, the Cal Fresh program manager.
Zeb Daniels and his dog, Tina, survived the Camp Fire and are trying to navigate the pandemic.
“There was fire in front and to the back, to the right and to the left,” said Daniels. “It hasn't been easy, I can say that.”

There is some relief for people in the CalFresh program as they are getting a 15% increase in their benefits.
“The federal government through the Food and Nutrition Services did a COVID-19 act, which allows us to increase the allotments by 15%,” said Kelley.
With the 15% increase, a single household can get as much as $234. While a household with eight or more can get up to $1,408, plus, an additional $176 per person.

“So we have lots of folks that are still not back to work,” said Kelley. “They're making ends meet barely, but this at least gives this one less thing to worry about because food is essential.”
Daniels relies on his EBT card every day so this 15% increase would be a big help.
“I’m all for it,” said Daniels. “That will help and help me get a steak dinner every now and then too.”
The extra money should last until June 30.
