Long Beach now has its own Amazon Fresh grocery store.
The brand opened its first Long Beach location on Thursday, March 18, at the former Haggen Food & Pharmacy, 6235 E. Spring St. The site is the eighth Amazon Fresh store to open in Southern California and the 12th in the country.
The first Amazon Fresh grocery store opened to the public in the fall in Woodland Hills. The stores feature decent prices (like 15-cent bananas, 89-cent freshly baked bread, $1.79 freshly baked pizza slices and $4.97 rotisserie chickens) and Dash Carts, which use inward-facing cameras to track what’s in the basket and allow customers to skip the traditional checkout line; shoppers also have the choice to use a conventional cart and cashier.
“I’m pleased to welcome another grocery store to Long Beach,” Councilwoman Stacy Mungo, whose Fifth District includes the store, said in a statement. “Amazon Fresh has hired hundreds of our neighbors, and I’m also excited to try their innovative grocery shopping experiences that include Alexa and the Dash Cart.”
The store is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, but the 7-to-8 a.m. block is currently reserved for people ages 60 and up, those with disabilities and those whom the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines as high risk for coronavirus infection.
