SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — Saturday remained cold with a mixture of rain and snow in our local mountains. News 8’s Teresa Sardina got up to Mount Laguna around noon and said there was enough snow to build a snowman. The trip up took longer than normal due to the sheer amount of people who were looking to enjoy a wintery weekend.
San Diego County Sheriff’s reminded visitors to drive carefully and plan for slick and icy road conditions. Many roads in San Diego County’s mountains required chains.
Omar Rico from Chula Vista said, “It’s great, you know after a week of working from home.” This was the first time the Rico family had seen and felt snow fall to the ground. Omar added, “We don’t get this opportunity this often. It’s a short drive and look at this.” He told News 8 that his family has come out when the snow had already settled, but it was nothing like they saw on Saturday.
Sheriffs and residents are reminding visitors to the snow to “pack out” what they brought in to minimize the trash left behind.
As for the weather coming in the next few days, Sunday is expected to be a couple of degrees warmer with sunny to partly cloudy skies and lighter winds.
On Monday, the next Pacific trough was expected to dig rapidly down the California coast and bring another cold, windy day with scattered showers and mountain snow, the weather service said. The compact fast-moving shortwave may bring gusty west to northwest winds to all areas, strongest in the mountains and deserts.
Gusts of 50-70 mph on the wind-prone mountains ridges of San Diego County, the NWS said. A high-wind watch may be needed.
