Kings' Davis addresses off-court issues, happy for fresh start originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
SACRAMENTO -- The acquisition of Terence Davis at the 2021 NBA trade deadline came with strings attached for the Kings.
After putting up solid numbers as a rookie last season in Toronto, the 23-year-old shooting guard ran into off-the-court troubles during the offseason, which is likely one of the reasons he became available for the low cost of a second-round draft pick.
Saturday night, Davis flashed his talent on the court, scoring 27 points in the Kings’ narrow 129-128 defeat at the hands of the Milwaukee Bucks. He was as advertised on the floor, showing off his athleticism, length and physicality.
His career-best seven made 3-pointers jumped off the page as well.
Talent doesn’t seem to be the issue for Davis. He has an NBA body and plays with a force that the Kings often lack this season.
But his off-the-court issues can be problematic, even if they are technically in his rear view mirror.
Davis was arrested for an alleged domestic violence situation in October. Originally hit with seven charges, the former Raptor had all counts relating to a possible assault dropped by the New York District Attorney’s office.
He is still facing two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and criminal mischief, but according to TMZ, both of those counts will dissolve in a year if Davis stays out of trouble.
Davis spoke to the media on Saturday. While the focus was on his on court performance, he did address his legal situation and the conversation became emotional.
“That’s a very sensitive and personal subject right there, man,” Davis said. “I don’t want to touch too much on it, because it’s kinda still ongoing, I would say. Not as much, but I’m still going through some things with my son, trying to have custody of him and that sort. But it’s a very sensitive subject.”
“I’m happy to be here, happy to just be in Sacramento, man, I’ve got a fresh, clean start. I was dealing with a lot over in Toronto, as far as mental wise.”
“My rookie year, I would say I had a pretty good year. I was an undrafted player -- going undrafted and making all-rookie second team. And then for the unfortunate situation to go down and then things just flipped, like that, it’s almost like the world was against me and my back was against the wall. Like I said, I’m just thankful, I thank God for just putting me through that situation and helping me get out of it, man.”
“When you’re going through something like that, it defines you as a person, as a man, for me, as a father. I’m just excited to be here, excited to be a part of the Kings. I’m happy man, I’m ready to get to work and continue to work. This is a fresh start for me, man, I just want to take advantage of it.”
“As an individual, I’m a tough dude. You know, just having to deal with so much. I haven’t really seen my son in a while. I’m getting kinda teary right now, man, just talking about this situation. I’ve been through a lot. I’m just happy to be here and happy that the Kings welcomed me with open arms.”
To date, Davis hasn’t not received a fine or suspension from the NBA for his role in the off-the-court situation and neither did the Raptors.
According to multiple sources within the Kings’ franchise, the team did background on Davis’ situation and determined they were comfortable acquiring him, moving forward with him as a player and welcoming him in as a member of the franchise.
