PARAMUS — An Amazon Fresh supermarket is coming to the former Fairway Market location in the Fashion Center, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed Wednesday.

The Fairway Market in Paramus closed its doors for good last year, as did the Woodland Park location of the New York-based chain. Both Paramus and Woodland Park Fairway Markets were purchased by Amazon. The Woodland Park location was confirmed to be an Amazon Fresh store in November

The Paramus store, off Route 17 north on Ridgewood Avenue, will offer a similar experience to other Amazon Fresh stores that are open, Amazon said. There are 12 Amazon Fresh supermarkets operating, mostly on the West Coast.

How does Amazon Fresh store work?

Compared with the Amazon-owned Whole Foods Markets, Amazon Fresh supermarkets offer a wider variety of goods at lower prices. They are also larger, at around 40,000 square feet.

One of the distinguishing features is the optional checkout-free shopping. The stores offer Dash Carts, which don't require a stop at the cashier. Shoppers can pack as they go, and the carts will automatically scan items and charge the customers.

The stores also feature “Ask Alexa” stations throughout the aisles.

The company says Amazon Fresh "is a new grocery store designed from the ground up to offer a seamless grocery shopping experience, whether customers are shopping in store or online."

There are no details on an expected opening date for either North Jersey location, the spokesperson said.

Amazon Fresh originated as an online grocery delivery service before branching out to brick-and-mortar stores offering 21st-century technology. The first stores in the United States opened in Woodland Hills and Irvine, California.
