Now in its third month of operation at its new 6250 Market St. location, Biggers Market is starting the season out strong with fresh produce and a wide variety of local products.
Because the growing season starts earlier in Florida, much of the market’s produce is coming in from the Sunshine State for now, but as North Carolina nears its peak growing season, the bulk of items will be harvested within the state, as close to the Cape Fear region as possible.
North Carolina-grown produce that’s available now includes strawberries, sweet potatoes and asparagus. But shoppers will also find tomatoes, corn, peppers, cucumbers, squash, eggplant, melons, and Florida-grown citrus for about another month, according to Biggers co-founder Sven Wallin.
By the time the citrus moves out, North Carolina blueberries will be in season.
The market carries meat from farms across the state, including Heritage Farms Cheshire pork, whole chickens and chicken breasts from Joyce Farms, as well as ground elk and beef.
Customers will also find eggs, cheese and Guernsey Girls Creamery milk, as well as breads and baked goods from Breadsmith and Apple Annie’s Bakery. Local favorites such as Antonio Carlo gourmet sauces, salsas from RAWsalsa, and sparkling and dried teas from Tama Tea are also on hand.
But the list doesn’t stop there – Biggers carries dozens of jams, jellies, spices, honey, hot sauces, pickles, dressings, dried fruits and nuts – plenty of pantry items to round out a meal.
The market is also currently flush with plants, herbs and flowers for the home gardener.
To create a community shopping experience, Biggers is hosting local musicians on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.
“You can hang out and listen or just enjoy the music while you shop,” Wallin said. “We hope to eventually have some food trucks onsite during those peak hours as well.”
Wallin said the new market has received a very positive response, particularly from residents of the nearby Long Leaf Acres neighborhood who are enjoying walking and biking to the market.
“We couldn’t be happier with the new location,” Wallin said. “It’s going really well and people seem to be really interested in supporting local.”
Biggers Market is located at 6250 Market St.and is open Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
