ANN ARBOR – Arbor Farms - every Ann Arbor townie’s favorite independent grocer - has just reopened the seating at their indoor cafe.
It’s been a slow return to something resembling normal for the staff at the store, known for carrying any and all varieties of fresh produce, vegan and gluten-free options as well as packaged goods from local restaurants. Their buffet-style salad garden - a lunch favorite - reopened just a few weeks ago, but store director JD Hennigan says they’ve seen customers all year at their deli counter, where they serve up sandwiches grilled to-order alongside hearty soups, heaping portions of cold salads and even specialties like barbecued ribs, burritos and quesadillas.
Hennigan said even through the winter he saw bundled-up customers - many of whom were regulars at the cafe before they switched to working from home - traveling to Arbor Farms, making a beeline for the deli or cafe and taking their hot drinks and meals onto the store’s covered patio to eat outside clad in heavy coats.
“The people who would come in here in December, January or February and enjoy their coffee and a croissant, they’d still come in, they’d just eat it out there and shiver,” he said.
Once the weather warmed the store brought back patio tables, reintroduced their hot food bar and and salad bar and finally, this Monday, returned to limited indoor dining.
The cafe’s most popular dishes include the Broccoli Sunshine salad, a vegan cold salad featuring the titular green vegetable with red onions, raisins and sunflower seeds in a canola-based “vegannaise,” the Stadium Club sandwich, which features turkey, ham and bacon with lettuce, tomato and red onion on farmer’s bread, and their Mediterranean vegetable sandwich served on flatbread with feta cheese. Rotating specialties include barbecue ribs, quesadillas and burritos as well as daily soups and deli salads. Each dish is prepared daily from scratch in the store’s kitchen.
The attached community cafe serves up RoosRoast coffee, espresso and tea as well as signature smoothies and fresh-pressed juices. For many customers, the cafe serves as a familiar gathering space.
“People just want that feeling of normal,” Hennigan said. “It’s like whenever you’re sick, you crave that chicken noodle soup your mom used to give you.”
Arbor Farms, 2103 W. Stadium Boulevard, is open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m, to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m, to 7 p.m.
