CNN - Dollar store customers may have the chance to access healthier food options.
Dollar store chains are starting to offer fresh produce after years of criticism saying that they do not provide enough healthy options for their customers.
Family Dollar customers will now be able to buy fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as frozen poultry, pork and beef at about 100 of its more than 7,000 stores.
Dollar General is also looking to expand their fresh produce department this year, as well. Currently, 1,300 locations offer produce but the chain said they want to add 1,000 more stores to the list.
Dollar stores, usually stocked only with non-perishables and snacks, can exacerbate food deserts. The CDC defines a food desert as an area with poor access to affordable, healthy food. Food deserts can contribute to health issues like obesity and cardiovascular disease.
