Threshold Learning Center (TLC) is holding its third-annual Fresh Air Concert on Saturday from noon to 9 p.m.
The public is invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets and relax on the hillside while enjoying a day with a wide-variety of music styles and great entertainment, all for a free-will donation.
TLC will be hosting seven local bands and solo acts on its stage set among the trees.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase and there will be many activities for everyone to enjoy.
“We at TLC have had a blast watching everyone come together and enjoy our facility the way we have always wanted it to be used,” said Gretta Reischauer, director of TLC. “Especially last year ... people were so excited to see one another again so there were distanced smiles and waves, laughter and dancing.
"The grassy hill was littered with blankets, camp chairs, coolers and bodies relaxing in the sun. Children ran around playing with bubbles, throwing balls, hiking the trails or visiting the creek. The whole day just really had a Woodstock feel to it – a day of peace and music. Just what we were going for!”
Reischauer and the TLC Board of Directors are very excited about the talent they have lined up for this year.
- Colo-NESCO’s very own high school cover band, The REAL Music Men, starts the day off at noon.
- They are followed by Clint Riedel at 12:30 p.m.
- The Hangmen from Eldora at 1:30 p.m.
- Folk-singer Ryan O’Rien at 2:30 p.m.
- Ames band Great Ceasar’s Goat at 3:30pm,
- and Boy Crazy…With Their Hit Song from Minneapolis takes the stage at 5:00pm.
- Sneaky Pete, a local favorite, will finish out the day from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Comfort Food Catering, The Oil Press and Mom & Pop Corn will have food and drinks available for sale. They will be offering everything from brisket or pulled pork sandwiches, chicken wraps, walking tacos and cheesy potatoes to popcorn, candy, chips and strawberry treats. There will be vegetarian options and items for the kids to enjoy. Pepsi and Coke products, strawberry lemonade and water will be available to quench your thirst.
TLC’s Fresh Air Concert is the non-profit’s only major fundraiser for the year. Thanks to some very special sponsors, TLC will be able to cover the expenses to put on the event so that all the proceeds from the free-will donations that day will help to provide the many outdoor education programs TLC offers.
Located at 13143 710th Ave., Zearing, TLC provides educational programs for schools throughout central Iowa in all sciences, Iowa history, conservation, nature appreciation and team building. Along with the school programs, TLC provides after-school programs for children in the Colo-NESCO school district, enrichment programs and trips for kids during summer break, and a way for families to “unplug” and re-connect with the earth and each other.
For nearly 20 years, they have improved the quality of the site on the corner of Zearing by planting 1,600 trees, establishing trails, building a team obstacle course, starting a Memorial Garden/ Arboretum and Community Garden, establishing prairie and wetland habitats and creating campsites and a large fire ring area.
TLC's biggest project was in 2005 and involved moving and renovating a barn into a dormitory for overnight participants. It has seven bedrooms, two bathrooms, a lounge, and a kitchen and dining hall/dance hall on the upper level. The barn is an additional community center that hosts many parties, weddings, meetings, graduation open houses, reunions, and events throughout the year.
Between the educational programs and site rentals, they are able to reach over 3,000 people each year. All of this has been accomplished with the support and help of the community.
