It is time for some fresh air in our town government - The Altamont Enterprise

To the Editor:

It’s that time of year again. That time when we open the windows and let in fresh air. That time when we clean out the closets from things no longer of value. It is the time for new beginnings. As with the walls that shelter us, it is also time to assess the town that should support us and the board members who should plan on our behalf.

We have seen a lot of development these past years. We have seen a drive endorsed by our town government to fill much land with apartment complexes. Every corner I turn seems to be another and I wonder who are all these people who will populate them, who are all these people who can afford their rent and why has it been so easy for so many builders to acquire permits and variances?

Has this really assisted our town seniors who could have used help in maintaining and remaining in their homes? Has it assisted those who were looking to downsize but continue as the homeowner they have been most of their lives?

It seems rather that businesses hit the jackpot these past years with easy access and support from our town government. Environmental issues were circumvented as well as input from our residents. Town board meetings had us jumping through hoops to not only hear their motivations and plans but to be a part of the agenda for growth and development. Transparency was not easy to come by.

So like our homes that need airing out I believe it is time for some fresh air in our town government. We need board members who promise not to take money from developers or open doors for family members. We need independent and accountable candidates.

We need candidates who will listen to the needs and wishes of residents rather than reflect an attitude of “we know what’s best.” We need honest, open, hard-working, and caring people who will work for all of us. We need Christine Napierski and Kevin McDonald.

Town growth is inevitable, but it must be cushioned and carefully planned. It must not be the product of self-serving and self-centered people. It is time to elect those to our town board who will see beyond themselves to the needs of Guilderland’s residents. It is time for Christine Napierski and Kevin McDonald, the fresh air that our town deeply needs.
