STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- In an attempt to help Staten Islanders take a step away from their screen and spend time outdoors, two local organizations are hosting the inaugural Fresh Fit Mall Mile.

The Fresh Kills Park Alliance and EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care have partnered together to incentivize Staten Islanders to walk along the New Springville Greenway and receive a complimentary gift once completed.

The idea came to the organizations due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, which kept many people at home over the past year.

“After a year of being cooped up indoors during the COVID-19 pandemic, now is a good time for New Yorkers to re-emerge and enjoy the outdoors again,” reads a press release from the organizations.

The walk starts at Fresh Kills Park, located at 2181 Richmond Ave., and ends at EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care, located outside of the Staten Island Mall next to Ulta Beauty.

To participant, Staten Islanders should download a fitness app - such as Strava or Runkeeper - to go for a walk, run, or bike for at least one mile of the New Springville Greenway.

Once the trek is complete, participants should complete a registration form online and include a screenshot of their activity stats from the fitness app.

Once the form is submitted, participants will receive an email that they can show to a representative at EmblemHealth Neighborhood Care to receive their reward.

Staten Islanders can participate in the Fresh Fit Mall Mile now through September 1 to receive the gift.

While on your trip, the organizers encourage participants to take pictures of plants, birds, and other wildlife and share them with on social media using #FreshFitMallMile.
