Fresh produce available at new Oroville farm stands - Chico Enterprise-Record

OROVILLE — If you head out of Oroville west on Highway 162 you’ll find two new farm stands overflowing with fresh produce.

The first, La Gloria, is on the highway between Oakvale Avenue and Ward Boulevard. Owners Luis and Gloria Soria operate the new stand on 6.5 acres of land recently purchased by their son-in-law.

The stand, which is operated and stocked with everything from watermelons, peaches, plums, berries, peppers and an assort of other vegetable by the Soria’s extended family of 21 people, is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, for now.

“We just opened, just started a couple weeks ago, so we are open all days since then. We’re trying to find a good break day,” said Jonathon Soria, 13, grandson of Louis and Gloria Soria.

Although they just opened, the stand is already popular with folks traveling up and down the highway to and from home and town.

“This is my first time stopping and it’s great. This is a perfect location. I love seeing new people especially families starting new businesses. I really hope they are successful,” said Rebecca Brinton.

In addition to bringing produce grown on the family farm and watermelons picked fresh in Woodland, the family is readying some of the acreage around the new stand to plant more crops.

Everyone staffing La Gloria wears a facemask when handing the produce and serving customers.

If you continue west on the highway you’ll start to see pink signs advertising another farm stand. This one is just off of Forbestown Road at 6176 Old Olive Highway and is only open on Thursdays from 2-6 p.m.

The stand, with plenty of shade and parking, is at the entrance to Peach Jamboree, formerly known as Woodleaf Farm, owned by Danny and Andrew Lazzarini.

“We wanted to provide the community that doesn’t live close to town with good, fresh produce closer to home. It’s fun meeting our ‘neighbors,’” said Danny Lazarrini.

This stand specializes in many varieties of organic peaches from Peach Jamboree and organic produce including potatoes, peppers, specialty plums, garlic, onions, eggplant, tomatoes and olive oil among many other vegetables from Towani Organic Farms, owned by Sharon Casey and Guy Baldwin, out of Bangor.

“We opened just before the Fourth of July and it’s been great. We’re doing more business then I expected,” said Guy Baldwin.

Shoppers at the Peach Jamboree stand are greeted by masked staff and asked not to touch any of the produce but the farmers are there to help make selections.

“Part of the reason for opening the stand was keeping people safer then if they went to a grocery store during this time,” said Danny Lazzarini. “We will stay open through peach season and may continue on through pear season. We’re not sure yet.”
