The Buy Fresh, Buy Local program, sponsored by Virginia Tech’s Cooperative Extension Service, has been in existence since 2006 and seeks to bring together farmers, food businesses, organizations, state agencies and stakeholders across the state to work together to market local food.
Buy Fresh, Buy Local Heart of Virginia is one of eight chapters of the Buy Fresh Buy Local Virginia program that stretches across the Commonwealth.
The Heart of Virginia chapter covers 11 counties in South Central Virginia including Halifax County, where the Halifax Biomass plant is located.
Fifteen family owned farms and businesses located in Halifax County sell fresh produce and meats through a network of local vendors, including the farmers market in the towns of South Boston and Halifax, and directly from their farms.
NOVEC, Halifax County’s Biomass plant, recently donated $500 toward the program.
The NOVEC donation will be used to offset costs in printing the 2021 Buy Fresh, Buy Local guide that will be distributed in each of the 11 counties. Additional information can be found at www.buylocalvirginia.org.
