STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Island has a rich history.
On S.I. Rewind, we revisit the borough’s past.
For this episode, we take you back to the smell we all remember so vividly: Fresh Kills landfill. Or, as many of us affectionately refer to it: the “Staten Island Dump.”
Check out this video and let us know if you can still remember that pungent smell you’d notice while driving around the borough in the summertime.
FRESH KILLS LANDFILL HISTORY
The Fresh Kills landfill, better known as the “dump,” closed its gates in 2001.
Opening in 1948, Fresh Kills was the city’s dumping ground for 53 years.
Over the years, the landfill became notoriously known as the “Staten Island Dump” and was New York City’s only operating landfill receiving residential garbage by the early 1990s.
Eventually, on March 22, 2001, the last barge carried 505 tons of garbage to Staten Island.
Now, the New York City Parks Department is using the 2,200 acres to create one of the largest parks in the city.
Take a look at the landfill’s transformation to sprawling park over the past 20 years here.
