Beijing, May 24 (EFE).- Taiwan implemented Monday a ban on eating or drinking at restaurants and bars in Taipei, which has emerged as the hotspot of a fresh Covid-19 outbreak.
Food joints in the capital will only permitted run take-away facility or home delivery options.
If the establishments do not comply with the new regulations, they will face fines of between 3,000 and 15,000 Taiwanese dollars ($107-$536).
According to the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control on Monday, 339 fresh Covid-19 cases were detected in the last 24 hours, marking the eighth consecutive day it has registered in the island.
Taiwan has so far managed to keep the pandemic in check due to its swift response system.
Rapid testing centers for the coronavirus became operational Monday in 20 hospitals in the Taiwanese capital.
Moreover, state-owned CNA agency reported that local authorities have rolled out measures to increase hospital capacity and efficiency, such as designating more hotels as quarantine centers for infected patients.
The areas most affected by the latest outbreak are Taipei and the surrounding municipality of New Taipei, both located at the northern end of the island.
The number of infections have almost tripled over the last few weeks in Taiwan, which has so far detected 4,917 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 29 deaths since the pandemic started. EFE
